Fantastic artwork and wonderful stories for both adults and kids
By Karissa Eckert
Previously I have read The Arrival by Shaun Tan I was amazed by both the artwork and the depth of the story in that book. So when I was offered Lost and Found through the Amazon Vine program I was super excited to read it. This is a fantastic book; it appeals to both kids and adults, contains stories accessable on many levels, and has just absolutely enchanting artwork.

This book consists of three stories. The first is The Red Tree which tells the story of a young girl dealing with troubles only to find hope at the end of her trials. The second is The Lost Thing which tells of a boy who finds a Lost Thing on the beach and tries to find a place where it belongs. The third is written by John Marsden and is called The Rabbits. This is a story about white rabbits who take over a world and eventually destroy it.

All of the stories have the story itself and then a deeper meaning as well. My son who is four years old enjoyed The Lost Thing the most; he was fascinated with the strangeness of the Lost Thing and was interested in the idea of finding strange things that don't belong in the world. This story will also touch a chord with adults as it addresses the idea that as you get older you see less of wonder and strangeness in the world. My favorite was the Red Tree; I loved the complex art work in this one and the depth of the story despite it being very sparse on words.

The artwork is fantastic. Again the Lost Thing has the type of artwork that I most associate with Shaun Tan; pictures of strange fantastical beings that are part fantasy, part machine, and part sci-fi. I love Shaun Tan's art; you can look at these pictures for a long amount of time and continually see new things...they are complex and fascinating. There is definitely a bit of steampunk theme throughout; the stories are a bit darker and feature beings made of both monstrous and mechanical parts meshed together.

Overall this is just and absolutely stellar book. I really enjoyed it and my son did as well. Wonderful stories that are accessible at different levels and mean different things to children and adults, complex and fantastical artwork, this was just a super interesting book. I can't wait to see what Tan comes up with next.

Embracing Imagination - Teachers Take Notice
By J. A. Bell
An ultra-imaginative picture book containing three very different stories for "kids" of all ages, with over 100 of Shaun Tan's colorful, surreal and sometimes phantasmagorical paintings and illustrations.

"The Red Tree," written and illustrated by Tan features a red-haired girl who lets her imagination run wild with awful thoughts, expressed by Tan as fantastic, detailed surrealistic cartoons, all but three of which are rendered in somber colors. The girl's mood is dark until she emerges from her ennui when she sees a little red bud which develops into a full-grown, brilliant tree.

Full-page and double-page spreads of Tan's artwork featured between the stories would look wonderful matted and framed, hanging on a wall. I especially liked the reproduction of his 77 bottle caps assemblage with a sepia physics cartoon as a base. Each of the 7x11 bottle caps is illustrated with a math or physics equation, directional symbols, words or sentence fragments and one painting. There is also an alluring scene of long-legged black and white birds standing in blue pond.

My favorite of the three, "The Lost Thing," written by Tan and jam-packed with his wondrous illustrations, is about a boy who finds a weird creature and takes it home with him. The story unfolds as the boy tries to help The Lost Thing find the place where it belongs. Humorous storyline and art are underscored by droll mechanical drawings in sepia tones. One particular painting toward the end of this story ("what seemed to be the right place" for The Lost Thing) emerges as a work of pure genius, combining elements and inspiration from art as diverse as Hieronymus Bosch to Joan Miro, Salvador Dali to Giorgio de Chirico to Marcel Duchamp.

"The Rabbits," written by John Marsden, and illustrated with diverse art by Tan is about rabbits who came, saw and conquered a continent, possibly Australia. The rabbits are strange, anthropomorphized, trussed in formal clothing and French military uniforms. They have peculiar ears. And their reproduction is way out of control.

The entire book is very stimulating for anyone who appreciates art and ideas presented with imagination, skill and humor. It brings to mind Einstein's phrase, "...imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand."

This book should be in every school library as a readily available resource for students of art and writing, in particular, as a source of inspiration. And it should be in every classroom as a source of pure enjoyment and discourse for all students.

Darkly Mesmerizing
By Arwen Nightstar
There is a darkness to this children's book. Suggested for ages 10 and up, I think it is a book many adults will want to examine as well. The words remind me a bit of Shel Silverstein's voice--from his ABZ's book, really.

In "The Lost Thing" the backdrop to the melancholy tale has a steampunk feel to it. Mechanical gadgets, strange buildings and seemingly unfeeling people populate this world. This was my favorite of the three stories. I think tweens will identify with the young man who isn't listened to but sees things others do not. It's a reminder to stay observant and not get too self-focused.

The opening story didn't work as well for me simply because it seemed far too heavy on the gloomy. This one had more of a Gothic overtone to me with dark leaves dotting the opening pictures. Throughout this story, really pay attention to what is happening in the pictures.

And then the illustration of "The Rabbits" by Robert Marsden is brilliant. It would make a very good teaching tool to talk about colonization and aboriginal peoples' losses. It is sad and unflinchingly honest.

The theme of lost and found in this book is well established. Sadly, I feel that there was more lost than found overall. This is a book I will return to again. It leaves an indelible mark on you the moment you open it.

Visually, it's stunning. The graphic novel feel will appeal to many young readers who may appreciate the visual affect. I recommend this book to anyone who has an intelligent, seeking child. You won't be disappointed.

Review

"Brandler and Roman’s new textbook is a cause for celebration because, unlike others, it is solidly grounded in the actual experiences of contemporary group work in the hurly-burly of the field. The authors write with elegance and sensitivity, often making connections to literature and the arts. Students will have a ready resource that inspires and provides practical guidance based on solid theory and accessible concepts."

―George S. Getzel, DSW, is professor emeritus at the Hunter College School of Social Work of the City University of New York and consultant to the Actors Fund of America.

"In Group Work, Brandler and Roman have again produced a text that is as enjoyable to read as it is informative. Peppered with vignettes and constructive critiques of workers’ interventions, Group Work highlights the use of self and solid social work practice. This volume takes the mystery out of group work and makes it accessible to the novice as well as the seasoned practitioner."

―Ida Anger, MSW, ACSW, LCSW, ICDVP, worked for 37 years at Metropolitan Family Services in Chicago, Illinois, and has received numerous awards for her work.

"Brava! Group Work beautifully lays out all of the issues in working with groups. The new chapter on diversity and use of self is rich in knowledge and thought provoking content. The authors brilliantly pose the questions of diversity and describe the struggles of both the worker and the group members in establishing the trust necessary to confront and explore sensitive issues. All of the chapters are strengthened by powerful and rich examples of diverse social work settings outlining both positive and appropriate worker interventions as well as less effective interventions by the worker."

―Deborah Feldman, JD, LCSW, is director of social work/family care services at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, New York.

A Rollicking Recounting of a World Gone Mad
By David Boldt
This is a book for people who believe books about entertainment should be entertaining. It is not for those intent on calculating (to the second decimal) what percentage of a given Beatles' song was written by Paul, and how much by John, a scholastic debate that seems to be in vogue currently. Ivor Davis 'extensively researched account of the Beatles first US tour (and he was there), while chock full of interesting information, is much more an account of Beatlemania than a treatise on Beatle-ism. It not only tells you a lot about the Beatles, it takes you back to that initial era of maximum excitement, letting the reader try to figure out what all the shrieking was about - and maybe even relive a little of it.
Davis uses the story of the opening tour that took the Beatles from the Cow Palace in San Francisco to the Paramount Theater in New York - with big loops in between through Canada and down to New Orleans and Jacksonville - as a matrix to tell pretty much the whole story of the Beatles. For instance, Beatles manager Brian Epstein's dependence on prescription drugs, his sensitivity about his homosexuality, and his ambivalence about his Jewishness are all in evidence in episodes from the tour, and these are depicted well by Davis in his straight ahead, take-no-prisoners, call 'em as you saw 'em journalistic style. Epstein, for instance, asked Davis to arrange a ticket for him to Yom Kippur services in New Orleans. Davis did so, but then Epstein failed to show. Then Davis, in the book, delves deeply into his own library of over 300 books on the Beatles plus other sources, to fill in the rest of the story of Epstein's downward spiral to suicide.
Not that there's any shortage of interesting little factoids from the Beatles early days in the US. This reader, for instance, didn't know Ed Sullivan had never heard the Beatles sing before they performed on his show. (He had however, heard the shrieking of a mob of teenage girls who were welcoming the Beatles at Heathrow Airport, and that was apparently good enough for him.) Nor did I know (though many more serious fans probably do) that Capitol Records didn't even release the first Beatles record it had the rights to because an executive didn't think the Beatles had what it took to sell records in America. Indeed, one of the interesting aspects of the book is the fact that no one at the time really understood that the Beatles were to become legends in their own time. John Lennon thought their period of popularity might last four years. Ringo Starr was planning to open a hair dressing shop when fame faded. Davis, then a brash young ex-pat British journalist in his mid-20s who had more or less talked his way into a job as the bureau chief of the London Daily Express' (one-man) "West Coast Bureau," admits he had no idea what lay ahead for the Beatles. (Davis himself has an interesting story to tell in the epilogue. He left his job as a PR guy for a chain of lower-priced vacation resorts in England - having decided to become a Hollywood reporter - and arrived in the US with a suitcase and $100. He knew very little about the Beatles when he was assigned to join their entourage as a permanent traveling member.)
Sorting out what the Beatles' appeal was (and remains) is as challenging for Davis as it has been down through the years to other chroniclers. To many back then it just seemed like refried American rock `n' roll. However, Davis makes it very clear that it was NOT the music they played in the stadiums and arenas on the tour that set the world afire -- because no one could hear it. Not only was the shrieking of the teenage virgins earsplitting from start to finish - drowning out most of the music - but the sound systems in the venues were uniformly horrid, something the Beatles constantly complained about. They couldn't even hear themselves. Ringo Starr, on at least one occasion, had to lip read the singers to figure out which song they were playing.
He really should have known. The Beatles played the same 12-song, 27-minute set at every concert, always concluding with ¨Long, Tall Sally," at which point Davis and the other members of the traveling party would leave their front row seats, slog through the gooey detritus of melting jelly beans flung by the bushel at the musicians during the concert, in an effort to get out ahead of the stampede. The Beatles themselves often made their escape in an ambulance, siren shrieking, lights flashing. One of the Beatles finally puts the beam of an insight on all that is happening: The fans didn't come to hear them sing; they came just to see them. It was more of a pilgrimage than a cultural experience. Its meaning more than snappy melodies or catchy lyrics. A joyous release, perhaps, from the tragedy of the contemporaneous Kennedy assassination.
Davis also displays a real gift as an anecdotist. One of my favorites is an exchange between an actor and Zsa Zsa Gabor at a Hollywood celebrity party. The actor asked Zsa Zsa if the Beatles were going to sing. ¨Do they sing?" Zsa Zsa asked, her grip on events on popular culture apparently slipping badly. And Davis doesn't skimp on the sex and drugs and booze, and believes he has added some clarification to previous accounts of how Bob Dylan introduced the Britishers to marijuana (subsequently a staple of their medication diet). But he doesn't dwell on the seamier episodes. For example, he tells about the mother who was paid $10,000 to keep her mouth shut about the (consensual, not to say eager) attendance of her daughters at a party in the Beatles Las Vegas suite, but doesn't get into what exactly the sisters were up to at the party. He alludes to the goings-on indirectly, in more well told anecdotes. On one memorable "morning after," for instance, Davis asked Ringo why he looked so melancholy and glum. The drummer, grimacing visibly, explained in clear, earthy language that it's because of the acute soreness of his sexual member.
All in all, "The Beatles and Me On Tour" is a rollicking recounting of a world gone mad - all except for a small island of intermittent quasi-sanity that existed from time to time on the floor of hotels occupied by the Beatles and their traveling party -- including Ivor Davis.

The Beatles and Me
By Lisa H.
If you love The Beatles, the Sixties, and great writing, this new book is a must read! Seriously, you feel like a fly on the wall, as if you were there back in 1964. If you're unfamiliar with Ivor Davis -- he hung out, traveled with and got to know The Beatles in 1964. If you're unfamiliar with Ivor, he was a foreign correspondent, a New York Times columnist, editor at large for LA Magazine and more, and he's covered everything from Civil Rights in Mississippi, the Robert Kennedy assassination, Angela Davis and Daniel Ellsburg to the Sharon Tate murders, Patty Hearst and even the World Soccer Cups. Enjoy the read, I know you will. And when you're done, you'll want to read his other books, too. I promise.

Great summer read about one summer 50 years ago.
By kathleenkaiser
I lived this too, but on a much lower level as the Yeah Beatles Fan Club President from San Diego. Ivor captures what life was like inside the tornado that was The Beatles that summer. Well written, interesting insights to each Beatle. If you were young in 1964, the Beatles were it and Ivor delivers the stories we all wanted to be part of back then.

Great summer read!

Book one in The Earth Angels

Investigative journalist Kendall Glynn is horrified when a friend and colleague signs off permanently during a live newscast, jabbing a pen into his jugular. Kendall's no expert, but judging by the strange white veil in the anchorman's eyes, she would swear he was a man possessed.

A descendant of the accursed Nephilim, Zeke Reece prowls San Francisco by night, keeping the city free from paranormal phenomena. But even he is no match for whatever malevolent force is behind a recent rash of murder-suicides. And when a beautiful tenacious reporter becomes the next target, Zeke has no choice but to stay close to her, until he can find the evil spirit and cross it over.

The closer Kendall gets to the truth, the more danger she's in. Fortunately, a sexy and mysterious masked stranger keeps swooping in to the rescue. Kendall's life depends on finding who or what is responsible for the killings, before it finds her.

Review: Nobody's Angel - 3.5 Stars, B+
By Jen Twimom
My Rating: 3.5 stars: Liked it - recommend (B+)

Evil is among us, and investigative reporter Kendall Glynn has just enough para in her normal to realize things are not as they should be. When she witnesses firsthand her coworker and friend attempt to kill his co-anchor and then end his own life while on air, Kendall notices a strange veil of color in his eyes. Then when EMT Zeke Reece questions her about the apparently freaky eyes, Kendall starts to put her investigative skills to good use, trying to uncover what is happening.

Zeke seemingly knows more than he's letting on, yet he attempts to discredit Kendall and turn her away from the story. He was aloof and tried to make Kendall feel stupid for believing she saw something out of the ordinary. This bothered me - knowing that Zeke and Kendall would eventually become a couple. However, I enjoyed that Kendall recognized Zeke's attempts to discredit her, and instead of letting it bring her down, she fought harder for the truth.

The reader (and eventually Kendall) discovers that Zeke is a human descendant of the Nephilim (children of angels and human women). Due to the particular Nephilim from which Zeke originated, he has extraordinary abilities, which he uses to protect humans under the guise of the Guardian Angel - a superhero-like, mysterious man. One of the things I enjoyed about the world-building in Nobody's Angel is how Kendall learns about the Guardian Angel (Zeke) via reading newspaper clippings on the web. It fits the feel of the story since Kendall is a reporter, while affectively giving the reader a tremendous amount of background without it being "told" the information.

Kendall meets the Guardian Angel and feels an inexplicable attraction, although he keeps his identity well masked. Then as Zeke and Kendall begin spending more time together, their mutual attraction gets the better of the pair. They share a sexy kiss in a coffee shop, and it was easy to get wrapped up in the emotions surrounding a really good first kiss. I also liked how Kendall pulled away, questioning her feelings towards the Guardian Angel while kissing Zeke.

Kendall is a smart woman and eventually pieces everything together (including Zeke's identity). I felt that Zeke and Kendall worked well together, when he wasn't trying to sabotage himself. I continued to be frustrated throughout the story at Zeke's treatment of Kendall's theories, claiming he knows more that she. I felt he belittled her one too many times.

Nobody's Angel is an excellent introduction to Ms. Gail's Earth Angels series. The novella-length story provides a good foundation for the series, which continues with the second book, Savage Angel (February 2013). Although sometimes the characters felt a tad over-the-top and slightly dramatic, I was impressed with the mythology, and the smexy times were hot. I look forward to more mischief from this new world created by Ms. Gail.

A Reading the Paranormal Review
By Kelly Rubidoux
I have a deep, dark secret to admit to. Prepare yourself. I am smitten. Both with Stacy Gail's writing and the fact that the beautiful man on the cover of this book is not waxed to within an inch of his life. *swoon* Also, his wings are kinda awesome.

Now, Kendall and Zeke have this smoldering longing going on. The type that makes you want them to smoosh together in a small, enclosed space and possibly get sweaty. Or just kiss. Whichever. They have the sneaking looks and the throbbing loins and all that other stuff that's pure awesome. I'm a sucker for this type of smolder. An absolute sucker.

*ahem* Right. So, Zeke's ancestry and the gifts he's been given are intriguing. Kendall's probing, investigative-type questions about the consequences of using his gifts opened up a whole world of possibilities that I hope we get to explore with others of his kind in later books.

The book was just flat out fun. It was dark, often dangerous, and definitely sexy. Stacy Gail has created a compelling set of characters and a bad guy that was skin-crawlingly creepy. I'm ready for the next book.

For a short read, Nobody's Angel was a fantastic listen.
By Felicia The Geeky Blogger
Listened for Fun (Audible)
Overall Rating: 3.75
Story Rating: 3.50
Character Rating: 4.00

Audio Rating: 3.50 (not part of the overall rating)

Quick Thoughts for a Quick Book: For a short read, Nobody's Angel was a fantastic listen. In fact, I think I found a new way to enjoy shorter stories. For some reason, narration added an extra layer to the story and it felt deeper than if I read it. Kendell and Zeke were both well-rounded characters that I was rooting for the whole way through. The mystery was well-planned and thought out. I thought the story could have been longer and deeper (there was just something missing I couldn't put my finger on) but overall I enjoyed it. Great read for an afternoon on the porch!

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated By Romy Nordlinger / Length: 3 hrs and 34 mins

This is my first time listening to a book narrated by Romy and she did a pretty good job. I think she made me like Nobody's Angel more than I normally would have but I didn't get a chance to get used to her male voices. It sometimes takes me a bit to warm up to male voices done by females and in short books that time just isn't there. I will give her another whirl though!

Not as good as I had hoped
By Amazon Customer
I am a great fan of Kimberly Logan and have been really enjoying the Daventry sister series. But I am afraid I am disappointed with this book. I loved the idea of Aimee overcoming Royce's terrible fears but it felt very contrived. There didn't feel like any build-up in chemistry and I felt the relationship between them was very forced. I felt no emotional intensity. Disappointed in this book but would highly recommend Logan's other books.

fabulous ending to the Daventry siblings' Regency romantic suspense
By A Customer
In 1823, Lady Aimee Daventry continues to have the nightmares that she has suffered from since she witnessed the murder of her mother ten years ago when she was nine years old. Although the late killer confessed five years ago, these dreams this time have her mom insisting she remember everything so that she can make them listen. Her two married sisters Maura and Jillian worry about Aimee who is so unlike them or their late mom, the actress Elise. Instead she is a mouse who plans to remain a spinster especially since the man she loves Viscount Royce Grenville rejected her last year as he said he was not interested in mice. Royce hides how much he desires Aimee out of fear that he is cursed to doom those he loves. He blames himself for the deaths of his late brother Alex seven years ago, his sibling's wonderful fiancée Cordelia nine years ago, and that of his unit at Waterloo.

With her two sisters settled (see SINS OF MIDNIGHT and THE DEVIL'S TEMPTATION) her father hopes to see Aimee married. However, before taking any vows, Aimee begins her quest that she pledge to herself to find her mother's killer. Aimee turns to Royce for help as her quest places her in danger from a killer who wants the secret of his/her identity to remain concealed.

This is a fabulous ending to the Daventry siblings' Regency romantic suspense trilogy. The return of the lead couples from the previous novels is more than a feeling of homecoming as they offer advice to the heroine's concerned father. However, the tale belongs to Aimee who may look and somewhat act like a mouse, but roars with claws out in perilous situations. The mystery of who killed their mother's murder is cleverly devised so that key threads from the previous tales are tied up nicely. Perhaps the only subtraction is that of a thug paid to kill Aimee turns illogically maniacal in his quest to complete this paying job.

Unseduced by this book
By Helen Hancox
Lady Aimee Daventry, now 19, has recently been plagued with dreams of the shocking event ten years before when she witnessed her mother being murdered. Immediately after the event she was unable to recall the actual events and it's only now, a decade later, that they are beginning to trickle back in her dreams. Aimee's sleep is regularly disturbed and she's not feeling too well.

Added to this is the reappearance in her life of Royce Grenville, Viscount Stonehurst. A year before Aimee declared herself in love with him after many years of friendship - and he completely rejected her. However for someone uninterested in her he seems to care a surprising amount and when Aimee's life appears to be in danger she goes to stay at his remote Cornwall home with a chaperone. But the distance from London may not be enough to keep Aimee safe and the evidence of Royce's difficult and perhaps cursed life isn't enough to keep her from trying to help him and to spend time with him. As Aimee's memories return she begins to realise that the events surrounding her mother's death are closer to home than she might have thought.

This was a reasonable if unremarkable book. The plot of the murder and the way it was gradually solved wasn't particularly surprising - the main culprits were fairly easy to spot as the book progressed. The relationship between Aimee and Royce felt rather uneven and wasn't entirely convincing, and neither was his belief that he is cursed. His behaviour was also rather questionable in terms of a viscount seducing the daughter of a marquis without any apparent thought for the consequences or suggestion of 'doing the right thing'. Historical accuracy was variable with dialogue regularly peppered with americanisms and the choice of names often unsuitable for this period. Despite these criticisms there wasn't anything dramatically wrong with this book, equally there wasn't anything particularly interesting about it. It felt rather like one of many also-rans in a wide field of runners within this genre.

From Publishers Weekly
The exploits of Henkes's beloved, fiercely independent girl mouse Lilly and her friends, stars of numerous bestselling picture books, are collected on this chipper but rather spare production. Though supported by solid performances from the two seasoned actors at the helm, these mouse adventures fall a bit flat when heard without their visual picture-book counterparts. Henkes's original text and illustrations are such a seamless pairing—and his artwork contains much emotion and humorous detail—that something seems lost in this translation to stand-alone audio. Ebersole and Thomas give it their all, conveying the attitudes and feelings of the characters, but due to the lack of sparkle here, youngsters may want to stick with the print version. Ages 4-up. From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2–The well-loved texts of nine picture books by Kevin Henkes are brought to life in these readings by Richard Thomas and Christine Ebersole. The titles include: A Weekend with Wendell (1986), Sheila Rae, the Brave (1987), Chester's Way (1988); Julius, the Baby of the World (1990), Chrysanthemum (1991), Owen (1993), Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse (1996), Wemberly Worried (2000), and Lilly's Big Day (2006, all Greenwillow). Thomas reads three of the picture books in a warm baritone voice, using vocal inflections flawlessly. Ebersole's crisp enunciation is perfect and her vocal intonations are on-target as she reads six titles. Opening and closing credits are delivered with jazzy music playing in the background.–Stephanie Bange, Wilmington-Stroop Branch, Dayton Metro Library, OH
