Amazing Story of a Double Cancer Survivor, But That's It

It's Not About the Bike My Journey Back to Life is Lance Armstrong's death defying tale of how he survived cancer and returned to professional bike racing in Europe. The first time I read this book, which was before his fall from grace, I loved it. I believed then that Lance Armstrong was a courageous cancer survivor, a remarkable seven time winner of the Tour de France, and an American cycling hero. Today, I only believe that he is a courageous cancer survivor. His fall from cycling fame, grace and resultant legal problems have been well documented in the press and by Juliet Macur of the New York Times and others, so i will not repeat it here.

In his own words, Lance Armstrong does not come across as a very nice person to put it politely. His recovery from testicle and brain cancer plus his return to world class cycling is legendary and completely admirable, but it is what happened afterwards that is not so admirable. I found many hypocritical points in this book, which disturbed me, but I am going to rate this book only on the basis as an account of a remarkable, death defying cancer survivor who defied the odds and accomplished the unimaginable at that time. My wife is also a cancer survivor, and she does not believe in Lance Armstrong anymore, but I think his story of medical ressurection, literally, is important enough to give it four stars, but only for his account of beating two types of cancer, of which each one alone is very serious and life-threatening.

Freakin' Fool Proof!

So, I'm an educated guy. College degree and everything. I know the difference between a teaspoon and a tablespoon. I can read and follow directions. But my cooking has always been...well it's been: "at least it won't poison you"...and except for that one time that's held true. Who knew you had to cook the potatoes first when making potato and egg tacos? My friend's famous last words before disappearing into the bathroom "these potatoes are kinda raw, aren't they?"
Any-hoo, that's been my cooking experience up until now. NOW I have Hilah! I have her videos and her wonderful cook book! I got it 3 days ago and did what she recommended. I read it like a book. I now know how to shop! And that has always been an issue with me. How do I know which is the best garlic head? How do I store said garlic along with onions and herbs and all that stuff? Now I know!
After reading and then picking out a few recipes for the week (again, as she recommends)I have so far made the chili and the peanut noodles AND THEY CAME OUT FREAKIN' FANTASTIC! There will be no more southern backhanded compliment "oh, at least he tried. Bless his heart." These dishes are good! Really good!! It is now worth cleaning the dishes to have a delicious, fresh meal. It's now worth spending a little time when coming home from work to make something in which I know exactly what went in and how it was prepared. Worth the time to have a bit of left over for lunch the next day. This book is fun, informative and easy to follow. Thanks Hilah!!

Fun and comprehensive, anyone can learn to cook!

I am a pretty good cook if I don't say so myself. I was running out of ideas, and happened upon Hilah's cooking channel online last summer. Since then, I have made at least 50 of her recipes. She has a way of making everything seem so simple and easy, and, as my husband said after another great meal, "Hilah never steers you wrong."

The cookbook is comprehensive and what I like the most about Hilah and her cooking methods is that she doesn't think you need to buy a bunch of fancy equipment or ingredients to make great food! She keeps things basic and fresh, while avoiding canned and packaged foods. She is health minded without being over-the-top about it. This book breaks down the basics on everything from equipment to spices, food preparation techniques to a great vocabulary of cooking. I wish I'd had this book when I first moved out of the house and my nieces and nephews will be getting this book for graduation! -Nicoleincos

Fantastic and fun book -- for beginners and experts alike!

I received this book as a birthday gift because I asked for it after falling in love with Hilah via her YouTube channel. She's fun, funny, and has a fantastic personality and presence... and she's darn good at cooking.

First of all, as a vegetarian, it was important to me that there were recipes in here that I would use. And boy, are there ever! Her recipes are cleverly organized by meals and such. There are sections for breakfast (both work-day and weekend), brunch, lunch, salads, sandwiches, hot lunches, dinners (including one section called "Summer Time Suppers"), tacos, pasta "& friends", desserts, drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and even a few pages devoted to an entire vegetarian dinner, with several courses! But that's not the only thing I can eat in here. There are TONS of vegetarian options, and options for almost anyone's preferences.

On top of all the recipes, one of the coolest things about this book is all the helpful information. A lot of it is really basic, meaning this book is great for beginners, but having so many recipes and so many tables and charts and definitions all in one book really makes this cookbook a fantastic idea for folks who already think they know all there is to know.

In the first section alone, Hilah teaches you how to make a grocery list, how to go grocery shopping, how to read a recipe, and more. There's a 9 page section of terms and definitions commonly found in recipes. There's a whole section on equipment, and a giant chart about spices: what the spice is called, what it tastes like, what it is commonly used in, what it can be substituted with, and a fun fact about it! And the back of the book is also filled with immensely informative stuff like abbreviations, conversions, and a troubleshooting guide on how to fix common problems you may face in the kitchen.

On top of all this, the way Hilah writes is conversational and friendly, so not only is this an incredibly helpful and informative cookbook, but it also makes cooking really, really fun.

As I said before, the fact that all of this information is put into one book means that this is a great thing to have for cooks and bakers and folks at all levels of the kitchen skills spectrum. It's a really comprehensive guide to cooking without being at all overwhelming. I love it!

Theodore Roosevelt?

On October 14, 1912, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, crowd eagerly waited to hear Theodore Roosevelt speak. Roosevelt had served as president of the United States several years before, and he was campaigning once again for his old job.

His speech was written on fifty pages of paper that he had folded and stuck in his upper jacket pocket. Outside his hotel, Roosevelt never saw the saloonkeeper who approached him with a gun drawn. Someone in the crowd did see the gun and pushed the would-be assassin’s arm away, just as the trigger was pulled. The shooter fired once and Roosevelt fell to the ground, but quickly rose. He did not know he had been hit until someone noticed a hole in his overcoat. When he reached inside his coat, he realized he had been wounded. The bulky, folded speech in his pocket, along with the steel case for his glasses, saved his life.

Although he was bleeding, Roosevelt insisted that he give the speech. The crowd could not believe that he would continue to speak rather than go to the hospital after being shot. But Roosevelt told them, “It takes more than that to kill a bull moose.”

“Bull Moose” was just one of the nicknames Theodore Roosevelt earned during his long career in politics. Some of the others were Teedie, TR, Teddy (a nickname he hated), and the Trust Buster. But Bull Moose was a good choice for a man who was physically strong and who was always determined to do things his way.

“I care not what others think of what I do, but I care very much about what I think of what I do! That is character!” he famously said. The Bull Moose was certainly a man of great character.

Chapter 1
New York Boyhood

In 1858, New York City was the largest city in the United States. Almost eight hundred thousand people lived there! Ships arrived at its port carrying a wide variety of goods, including fabric, clothing, and food, along with people from many countries. Horse-drawn carriages rumbled down crowded streets. And on October 27 of that year, Theodore Roosevelt Jr. was born there.

His father, Theodore Sr., thought the newborn was a pretty baby, but his mother, Martha, nicknamed Mittie, wasn’t so sure. She thought her new son looked like a turtle. The Roosevelts already had a daughter named Anna. She and young Theodore were later joined by a little brother, Elliott, and then baby Corinne. For a time Mrs. Roosevelt’s sister, Annie Bulloch, also lived with the family.

Teedie, as his parents soon called Theodore, was part of a family that had deep roots in America. The first Roosevelt had come to New York from the Netherlands in 1644. The family bought plate glass in Europe and sold it in America. Teedie’s family was quite wealthy. Mr. Roosevelt believed in using his time and his money to help others. One of his concerns was helping orphaned children in New York City to find homes.

Great resource for my son's fifth grade book report. Valuable information was presented on various aspects of President Roosevelt's life with lively illustrations that kept my son engaged in learning. I learned a lot too!

Not only a 'MUST READ' but a 'MUST HAVE'.

'The Digital Document' was first loaned to me by a friend, but as soon as I began reading it I had to own it. It is an invaluable reference tool not only for people engaged in the construction and design industries, but any document-intensive work environment, IT professionals and document authors included. I find myself constantly going back to this book for ammunition in the ongoing effort to streamline workplace processes and convert others to a more efficient way of doing business.
And not only that; 'The Digital Document' helped me to first form a comprehensive understanding of the most intrinsic new issues underlying the electronic revolution in the modern workplace. Equipped with this new understanding and the wealth of information provided by this book I cannot help but feel as if I have gained a unique advantage when I see it's premises validated on a day-to-day basis. If you don't own 'The Digital Document', chances are you're missing out.

Uhh...where is the information????

I was actually hoping to find a useful book that would help me implement PDM software, or at least provide guidelines and recommendations. After reading this book, I feel like I could have written it (even though I know next to nothing about the subject).
It is so general, the subject is painted with very broad soft strokes. What about costs, implementation schedules, performance, real-world implementations, difficult release paths, conflicting requirements???
Do *not* spend the money on this book. Seriously, you will be dissapointed. It is hardly worth a fraction of the cost (pick it up used, if you must).

The Remarkable point about this book and the subject of persuasion is that it will help you understand the forms of communication that you are receiving. Great book and critically important especially today in this new world of mass media. It can be a bit dry at time because of the meticulous details that are contained herein but I Highly recommend this book. If you are struggling with people and relationships, this book will also help with clarity.
