Burg (coauthor, The World Almanac of the American Revolution, Pharos, 1992) competently delivers a narrative summary and chronology of major events in the United States and throughout the world during the Depression. He offers seven chapters, each covering one or more years; brief contemporary quotations from politicians, journalists, authors, and advertisements; and 80 black-and-white photographs. The appendixes contain a selection of primary sources, mainly New Deal statutes and other documents, and capsule biographies. The focus is somewhat different from that of existing reference series such as Britannica's "Annals of America," which is stronger on primary sources, and Time-Life's "This Fabulous Century," which offers better photographs. More recent competition comes from Victor Bondi's American Decades, 1930-1939 (Gale, 1995), which has a topical arrangement, a more attractive layout, and greater scope beyond politics but lacks the quotations. YA. These 10 short stories are stitched together with the common threads of personal crisis, change, and growth. All have straightforward plots and good character development. Three stories have particular appeal to YAs. In a first-person narrative, "The Lifeguard" describes sitting in his elevated chair, adored by all the young girls on the beach, and waiting for a crisis. When a toddler stops breathing, he tries everything he has been trained to do but nothing works. The child is saved by a divorcee whose constant presence on the beach has both disturbed and intrigued the lifeguard. He is compelled to seek out this older woman who wordlessly embraces him and then sends him on his way. Told in retrospect and filled with precise detail, the story leaves readers to ponder how this experience influences his life. The hero of "Slices of Life" is a young pizza entrepreneur who has caring relationships with his girlfriend and his customers but not his ne'er-do-well father. In "Souvenirs," a girl begins shoplifting as she struggles with growing up and the changes that it brings. Several selections feature married women dealing with husbands and children. Some have supernatural elements. The stories are uneven in quality, but all are succinct and enjoyable. These stories by the author of House Arrest (LJ 4/1/96) offer a range of characters and circumstances, yet the tone and structure are always the same: a somewhat bewildered protagonist tries to deal with a situation, tension builds, actions and feelings are rationalized, and the story ends abruptly, with no satisfying denouement. Sometimes the tension is caused by supernatural forces, as in "The Wall," in which an indelible mural on a kitchen wall has a mystical effect on the narrator's husband. In other stories, the tension results from prosaic domestic drama. The most successful story, "The Glass-Bottom Boat," about a housewife on vacation with her family in Jamaica who encounters local residents with magical powers, melds the enigmatic and the commonplace. Morris's third collection (Vanishing Animals, 1975; The Bus of Dreams, 1985) shows some of the flair for yarnspinning missed in her last novel, House Arrest (1996), but repetition lessens the overall impact of the ten tales here (nine previously published). Most of this volume's characters are poised on the cusp of a change, nowhere more so than in the title story, where a teenage lifeguard, accustomed to being the lord of all he surveys, has a rude awakening when he proves deficient in the first aid needed to save a toddler on the beach. But young male protagonists are an exception; much more common are married women (like Emily in ``The Snowmaker's Wife'') who learn something profound about the emptiness of their lives. Emily's husband spends his winter nights making snow at a ski resort, but when his nocturnal absences increase she begins to suspect something else; then her fear that he's stepping out with her best friend is verified at a time when she's most vulnerable. Melanie in ``Losing Track,'' Lenore in ``The Glass-Bottom Boat,'' and the unnamed cowboy's wife in ``Around the World'' all experience epiphanies when they go to the limit of what their husbands can do for them, then step beyond on their own: Melanie during an all-night vigil in Navaho land, Lenore on a Caribbean holiday when a native opens her eyes to a world she'd denied, and the cowgirl when the carnival comes along, bringing a handsome stranger to the laundromat. We don't learn what follows these personal revelations, but Morris's implication is that her characters' lives, if not completely transformed, will at least be easier to bear. Longing and change are better personified in some situations than others here, and the marital dynamic grows stale. An excellent short-story collection

Contrary to the pretentious New York Times review that's quoted above, this is a very moving, very artful collection of short stories. Morris is able, without irony or gimmickry, to sweep the reader into the tales of her protagonists. What most of these stories deal with are the subtle transformations that occur in people as events and time impact them. She doesn't spell out the way her tales resolve themselves because she doesn't have to; her characters own actions (or, in some cases, inactions) make the conclusions very apparent to the reader even when nothing is bluntly stated. Mary Morris is a fine teller of stories and this collection is worth reading cover to cover.

I am far more consumed by the awesome power of our mind, and how we can use it to unleash our hidden potential in all areas of our lives. Golf was the ideal entry point, because it is the one of the few sports where the mind is at least as important as technical ability, especially at the highest level.Why the connection with 'Magic' in the title 'Play Magic Golf'?I have a child-like fascination with magic in all its forms. We can learn how to perform card tricks, but we will never understand the magic that surrounds us in the natural world. How does a spider know how to construct its intricate web? About the Author
I have lived in war-torn Angola, the swamps of Nigeria, the steppes of Kazakhstan and the deserts of Oman. As an international Medical and HR Director I was privileged to work with many world leaders, including Bill Clinton, and was a task force member of the World Economic Forum, and Global Business Coalition.
Less pleasantly I was mugged, imprisoned, shot at, mortared, almost killed in a helicopter incident, experienced near-fatal malaria, the less serious dengue, dysentery, and the dubious delights of Tumbu infection. I also enjoyed fighting against esoteric tropical diseases, such as Marburg. This is a variety of Ebola, and just about the deadliest disease on the planet. I was part of the team that responded to the World's largest ever outbreak of Marburg, in Angola.

A Fascinating Read

I have known Steve Simpson for almost 40 years since we were at medical school together. Although we had hugely different backgrounds we shared many of the same interests (including beer) and even though my left brain and his right took us on widely divergent paths professionally and geographically, we have remained brothers over all these years. We both have a rather annoying (to others) habit that any social occasion on which we meet very quickly becomes a philosophical exploration of how and why we and others we know well have taken the trajectories through life that have led us to where we are, what we have learned along the way, and where we may be headed in the future.

I am almost totally indifferent to golf. Steve is not, but he asked me to read his book because it touches on some of the areas we have debated and discussed for many years. He may not agree, but "Play Magic Golf" is not about golf at all, any more than "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" was a Harley Davidson manual.

Much of what Steve writes about is common sense, but that kind of common sense which sits elusively just out of reach for most people until it is pointed out, and then they can only marvel at how they hadn't seen it before. Much is analytical in a very left brain way (sorry, Steve!) reminiscent of the classical stoic philosophy schools. Some is speculative, some wildly speculative, but in a very challenging and thought-provoking way.

Who would benefit from reading this fairly short book? Certainly golfers would, and probably other sportsmen, but as I said, it isn't a book about golf or even sport and it would be a pity if the readership was limited to sportsmen. It is a book about the intricate and fascinating way that the human mind is the warp to the weft of our everyday lives and achievements and relationships, and it is as relevant to physicians and plumbers, too. It is a celebration of choosing rather than simply reacting, and a handbook of exercises for strengthening the virtual muscles needed to direct the mind in positive directions instead of simply being an observer as it bounces randomly off the walls. Discussion of these concepts can all too easily descend into turgidity or sanctimony, but Dr Simpson avoids those traps to produce an enjoyable and often thought-provoking book.

Easy to follow and helps with day to day hassle's.

Easy to follow book that will be a perfect gift for all my friends and family that play golf and other stress inducing sports, but I can see how it will help people with stressful jobs too - I found several of the methods useful for my day to day hassles with my newborn. Entertaining and enjoyable to read too.

Very disappointing.

Have you noticed not one five star review? Don't waste your money on this book. It is more like a long newspaper story on positive self talk, self hypnosis, mindfullness, and other psychological motivators without any instruction on how to use them. The author rambles from subject to subject and even admits he has attention deficit disorder. Where was his Editor?

The book's jacket is really misleading because there is little detail and weak research. I was very disappointed.
