Excellent urban fantasy novel in an excellent series
By Todd V. Leone
I've been a fan of the Jonathan Shade series since Book 1. The clever twist Gary Jonas uses as to Jonathan Shade is that he's a private eye in a world where magic is known by and marketed to the general public. Jonathan Shade as a P.I. investigates paranormal crimes, but unlike most sleuths in urban fantasy mystery novels, Shade has no magical capabilities. In fact, what makes him unique is that magic does not affect him directly. A practitioner of magic could manipulate objects in such a way as to harm him -- for example, if a practitioner levitated a small boulder over Shade's head and dropped it on him, the falling boulder could kill him or badly injure him. However, if such a practitioner aimed a magical compelling force at Jonathan Shade to push him over a cliff, it wouldn't budge him. In this particular novel, we're dealing with time-travel and Shade is in big trouble, stuck in San Francisco in the latter 19th Century. It's the second in a three-novel series. The previous one was set in ancient Egypt and the third one, yet to be published at the time of this writing, should be in the 1920's. Shade has some interesting partners in trying to do the virtuous thing -- there's a female ghost who is in love with him and there's a woman warrior with exceptional, preternatural abilities. I highly recommend this series, but if you're not going to read the whole series in order, at least start with the first book of the current trilogy, which is "Anubis Nights". Then read "Sunset Specters". (The third novel of the current trilogy -- which will be the sixth novel of the Jonathan Shade series -- has not yet been published at the time of this writing.)

Couldn't put it down
By Kat
Couldn't put it down. Found myself saying just one more chapter. Finished the book in a day and a half. Loved the characters and the authors sense of humor. My only complaint is I haven't been able to find the next book. Can't wait to find it and continue the character's stories.

And a Bottle of Rum: A History of the New World in Ten Cocktails, by Wayne Curtis

One spirit, Ten cocktails, and Four Centuries of American History

And a Bottle of Rum tells the raucously entertaining story of America as seen through the bottom of a drinking glass. With a chapter for each of ten cocktails—from the grog sailors drank on the high seas in the 1700s to the mojitos of modern club hoppers—Wayne Curtis reveals that the homely spirit once distilled from the industrial waste of the exploding sugar trade has managed to infiltrate every stratum of New World society.

Curtis takes us from the taverns of the American colonies, where rum delivered both a cheap wallop and cash for the Revolution, to the plundering pirate ships off the coast of Central America, to the watering holes of pre-Castro Cuba, and to the kitsch-laden tiki bars of 1950s America. Here are sugar barons and their armies conquering the Caribbean, Paul Revere stopping for a nip during his famous ride, Prohibitionists marching against “demon rum,” Hemingway fattening his liver with Havana daiquiris, and today’s bartenders reviving old favorites like Planter’s Punch. In an age of microbrewed beer and single-malt whiskeys, rum—once the swill of the common man—has found its way into the tasting rooms of the most discriminating drinkers.

Awash with local color and wry humor, And a Bottle of Rum is an affectionate toast to this most American of liquors, a chameleon spirit that has been constantly reinvented over the centuries by tavern keepers, bootleggers, lounge lizards, and marketing gurus. Complete with cocktail recipes for would-be epicurean time-travelers, this is history at its most intoxicating.

From Publishers Weekly
Like a great barroom raconteur, the author of this engaging treatise regales his audience with piquant opinions, colorful trivia, lush rhetorical turns ("[t]he first taste washes over me and brings to mind the scene in Wizard of Oz in which the black-and-white world suddenly bursts into color") and an exalted, occasionally inflated, sense of liquor's place in the greater scheme of things. A travel writer and contributing editor to Preservation, Curtis follows rum's checkered 400-year career through various incarnations, from the cheap, caustic "kill-devil" that fortified 17th-century pirates (Blackbeard was said to enjoy a glass of flaming rum mixed with gunpowder) to today's mojitos, made from palatable, if bland, mass market rums. His profiles of rum-based cocktails (with an all-important appendix of recipes) serve as starting points for excursions on such topics as slavery in the West Indies, the temperance movement, Ernest Hemingway's epic daiquiri binges and the rise and fall of the tiki bar. Curtis's grander pronouncements ("Rum embodies America's laissez-faire attitude: It is whatever it wants to be")are true only in the groggiest sense, but readers who come along on this charming barhop through cultural history will toast them nonetheless. Toasts to And a Bottle of Rum

“And a Bottle of Rum is a fascinating tale of cultural metamorphosis, tracing rum’s remarkable journey from colonial rotgut to SoHo cocktail. A book with as many revelations about American history as about this archetypally American drink.” —Jack Turner, author of Spice: The History of a Temptation

“History never tasted so good. What Herbert Asbury did for the gangs of New York, Wayne Curtis does for rum: The profiteers who traded it, the pirates who raided it, the underclass who guzzled it, the mixologists who exalted it, and the corporations who homogenized it—Curtis tells their tale with style and sweep in a tour de force of social history, urban anthropology, and cocktail ‘alcohology.’ A delight from first sip to last.” —Jeff Berry, author of Beachbum Berry’s Grog Log, Intoxica!, and Taboo Table

“And a Bottle of Rum reveals the facts behind rum’s colorful history while telling a great story of rebellion and rumbustion!” —Dale DeGroff, author of The Craft of the Cocktail

“Wayne Curtis breaks fascinating new ground in this very palatable history of the world-through-rum-colored glasses. The writing shows what makes modern journalism so great: clean, succinct, inclusive smoothness—not unlike great rum—and Curtis is a virtuoso at it.” —Ted “Dr. Cocktail” Haigh, author of Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails

I very much enjoyed the author's use of anecdote to convey history in ...
By Nick Colaccino
An extremely interesting read. I very much enjoyed the author's use of anecdote to convey history in a more entertaining way than just giving facts and figures. However, I will say that a lot of the anecdotes seemed to be based more on the authors imagination than actual history. Sentences about the historical figures' thoughts and feelings are almost undoubtedly Mr. Curtis's own interpretation and not backed in research. In several instances, the reader gets the sense that Mr. Curtis is conveniently using these kinds of historical liberties to skew perceptions and alter the gravity of the quantitative source material (whether to make the fact more or less significant).

Overall, it is an entertaining and informative read. I high suggest this book.

Fun, Well-Researched History
By Cynthia Clampitt
I'm a historian and know a fair bit about U.S. history, and I have found this book to be not only delightfully fun reading, but also accurate in every detail that I had previously encountered, which is not as common as one might wish. With splendid insight into the part rum played in the history of the Caribbean and North America, this is a rollicking good read that not only introduces you to more (and different) American history than you ever learned in school, it also offers the inspiration and recipes to try some of the iconic drinks that grew up around the first distilled beverage to be created in the New World. (And even if you never touch alcohol, this is still a worthwhile read -- because rum was a major factor in world events for a couple of hundred years, and therefore worth noting.)

Fascinating, funny, and informative
By Geoff Puterbaugh
It's not often that one book can manage to be all three: funny, fascinating, and informative. In fact, this book makes me think that we really don't understand early American history all that well, although our knowledge is growing daily.

For example, why did Columbus wind up in the Caribbean, not in Virginia? Columbus was, of course, the pioneer, but the trans-Atlantic route became a Known Thing in short order: leave Europe and sail SOUTH to African waters, then cross the Atlantic in the tropical latitudes (winding up in the Caribbean). For the trip home, sail your loaded boat north to the area of Virginia, and then cross back to Europe. It was a rectangular journey. As the trade developed, ships would load up with goodies for the New World, head south to Africa (and maybe load some slaves, alas!), sail over to the Caribbean, unload slaves, load rum, and then sell the rum in North America (probably for tobacco), and then home, loaded to the gills with lumber and tobacco. Follow the Gulf Stream, and stray no more!

But we mustn't overlook that one tiny detail: load up with rum in the Caribbean, and carry it north to the future USA. Rum quickly became America's favorite drink: cheap, and intoxicating.

But where did it come from? Well, rum was the unlooked-for child of the sugar industry, which created some of the largest fortunes of its times. This book recounts an amazing, funny story of King George III, out for a ride in his gorgeous carriage with its glorious outriders --- who was almost run off the road by a much larger and more splendid carriage. "Who was that man?!" spluttered the King, only to be informed that it was a multi-millionaire sugar trader. The King whirled around to his Minister, and said, "Take a note! Investigate taxes on sugar!"

These ultra-rich Englishmen finally convinced Parliament to pass the Sugar Act --- to protect their massive incomes --- and this was the first time Americans actually got the British Government to change something. Massive cheating and smuggling forced the British to lower the tax to a mere penny --- and Americans learned that they had some power in the world. When Parliament passed the noxious Stamp Act, the result was the Boston Tea Party, and we all know where THAT led!

But who woulda guessed that rum (?!) played such an important role in American independence?

That's just a taste of the stuff in this wonderful book. If you're interested in history, I can't recommend anything higher (no that's not a pun!)

Cheers!

Should have stopped at the 3rd Edition
By Brent Dombrowski
I had the displeasure of using this book for a graduate level course on Software Engineering. We did not use the web site or the online learning tools associated with the book. The professor did use the author's supplied slides.

Pros:
* Very nice UML diagrams.
* Might get recycled into toilet paper.

Cons:
* Very repetitive. I lost track of how many times a legacy system was defined. This made reading this book extremely boring.
* Despite the 2011 copyright date, the material is dated. Computers are still single core, smart phones aren't on the scene, and Sun still owns Java (cue Oracle lawyers).
* The back of the book claims it has been updated with new material on open source development. That new material consists of a few paragraphs on the legal issues of incorporating open source into a traditional project. There is nothing on developing software for open source.
* The power point slides that accompany the book have problems with the graphics starting about chapter 5. The image quality of the embedded diagrams takes a nose dive and the images are barely readable.
* The topics covered seemed very shallow. I'm not sure you'll get much more out of this book then you would reading through wikipedia articles.
* The author has a habit of using acronyms without defining them. COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) was used for several chapters before it was spelled out.
* Electronic version (Kindle) has random spaces removed (as noted by other reviewers)
* The project schedule charts presented are Gantt charts. It seems the author has never heard of Gantt and just refers to them as bar charts.
* Some diagrams are mislabeled.
* There was at least one sample XML file that was used for a few problems. The XML was broken making it that much harder to figure out the problems.

If you are a professor looking for a book on this topic, please spare your students and find another book.
If you want almost the whole book for free, download the slides. Chapter 4 alone is 82 slides (29 pages in the book).

The only thing I'd like to get out of this book (besides my money back) is how the diagrams were created. I haven't found anything that comes close to the ones in the book.

Why do you need this book, or not?
By Jason
This book has such a poor rating in Amazon, and most of the reviewers feel the book lacks examples. It IS true.
However, I believe the author is NOT trying to provide the readers every detail about everything he is talking about. If I would teach a SWE course, the book would take me 2-4 semesters to cover. Just think about it, I can write a series of books talking about testing alone, about architecture alone, about XP in Agile alone, about......... This is not the book that give you the whole detail. However, why do so many professors choose this book as their textbooks(the 9th edition at least shows something)? Because it DOES provide a great overview about the key problems in SWE and most of the popular solutions to those problems. Also, it is the professor's discussion in the lectures and the labs that are more important to students who really wanna learn more about SWE. You MUST do projects, coding, putting those theories to practice to know that SWE really is. Even if the author put thousands of questions on the back of the book won't help you learn SWE.

My advice:
Get the big picture from the book, get the detail from the professors and other good resources. Learn what SWE really is through projects.

To those who wanna learn SWE by yourself:
ok......I have to say that is really tough. If you are in a company, you may don't have a lot of time, otherwise you may don't have project opportunity. As this book contains a lot of information while not that much details, it will drive you crazy sometime. So, this book only worth 2.5 stars for you :< the 2.5 stars are for you to grasp the big picture.

Comments from the author
By Ian Sommerville
As the books author, I'd like to say a couple of things about some of the adverse comments here:

1. Repetition. Yes - there is repetition and this is not accidental. The book is not designed to be read cover to cover and it is not, in my view, good for the reader to expect them to simply refer them to somewhere else in the book when a concept is introduced.

2. Dullness - some aspects of software engineering are dull. I have always hated testing and I can think of no way of making software testing and quality management interesting. But they are still essential for professionals - this isn't supposed to be about entertainment. All professions have dull aspects to them and it would be a disservice to readers to pretend that this isn't the case.

I think I have to give a rating for this so, for fairness, I've rated it the average shown.

Gothic Mom's Book Review
By ANNETTE M GUERRIERO
Today's review is on Daywalker: The Beginning-Nightwalkers, #1 by J. C. Stone

Daywalker is a fantastic read that captures the reader instantly, and takes them on a wild and crazy ride along with its main character Lacy Logan.

At just 21-years-old, Lacy is excited to be opening her own business as a Paranormal Investigator. Her career is cut short however when a hotter-than-hell, gorgeous man appears in her office, and literally sucks the life out of her and vanishes.

She doesn't know it, but she is a Daywalker. And Nightwalkers, like the one that attacked her, seek out supernaturals like her to take their power so that they can walk in the sun.

Everything about Daywalker is perfect except..........it's just to short!! At just 38ish pages, I feel a little jilted. I would love to see this as a full-length book. *hint, hint*

Great Read!!
By bookworm2121
I really loved reading this book. It was a quick read, probably about 40 minutes, and it captured my attention right from the start! The writer has an excellent sense of humor and the plot was highly intriguing - it definitely was not what I had expected (in a good way!). I also really loved Lacy's kick-ass character and how easy it was to relate to her.
This was definitely worth the 99 cents! Can't wait to read more in the future!

In Search of the Rain Forest (New Ecologies for the Twenty-First Century)From Brand: Duke University Press Books

The essays collected here offer important new reflections on the multiple images of and rhetoric surrounding the rain forest. The slogan “Save the Rain Forest!”—emblazoned on glossy posters of tall trees wreathed in vines and studded with monkeys and parrots—promotes the popular image of a marvelously wild and vulnerable rain forest. Although representations like these have fueled laudable rescue efforts, in many ways they have done more harm than good, as these essays show. Such icons tend to conceal both the biological variety of rain forests and the diversity of their human inhabitants. They also frequently obscure the specific local and global interactions that are as much a part of today’s rain forests as are the array of plants and animals. In attending to these complexities, this volume focuses on specific portrayals of rain forests and the consequences of these characterizations for both forest inhabitants and outsiders.

From diverse disciplines—history, archaeology, sociology, literature, law, and cultural anthropology—the contributors provide case studies from Latin America, Asia, and Africa. They point the way toward a search for a rain forest that is both a natural entity and a social history, an inhabited place and a shifting set of ideas. The essayists demonstrate how the single image of a wild and yet fragile forest became fixed in the popular mind in the late twentieth century, thereby influencing the policies of corporations, environmental groups, and governments. Such simplistic conceptions, In Search of the Rain Forest shows, might lead companies to tout their “green” technologies even as they try to downplay the dissenting voices of native populations. Or they might cause a government to create a tiger reserve that displaces peaceful peasants while opening the doors to poachers and bandits. By encouraging a nuanced understanding of distinctive, constantly evolving forests with different social and natural histories, this volume provides an important impetus for protection efforts that take into account the rain forest in all of its complexity.
