To deal with the visionary, he makes the obligatory stop through Blake, whose fiery social conscience and mythological incoherence made him the template for future literary "visionaries": Nerval and Lautreamont among the French; Burroughs; and the voices of Dadaism and Surrealism. As some of these writings are impenetrably concentrated, and outright antagonistic towards the reader, it is Ahearn's task to bridge the reader and these fictions, in order to communicate his own analyses of them. About the Author
Julia London was raised on a ranch in West Texas, where she spent her formative years in the middle of vast wheat fields driving a tractor at the reckless speed of five mph. In spite of her humble beginnings, Julia went on to earn a degree in government and eventually landed in Washington, D.C. There for nine years, Julia had her brush with greatness when one day she actually shared an elevator with a senator from Iowa. She eventually returned to Texas and now lives in Austin with two enormous Labrador retrievers. Wicked Angel is Julia's second book and a sequel to her first, The Devil's Love. Julia is currently working on her next book for Dell.

* Sigh...* This book is what romance is all about!

After reading all the books from authors like Judith McNaught and Julie Garwood in this genre, I thought I wouldn't find another author that could write like them. But oh, oh, oh, to my surprise Julia London is just as good!
This is the first book of Julia London that I've read and Devil's Love is totally scrumptious! The story of Michael and Abby is so delightful, so romantic, so heartbreaking and sooooo good. Abby is sunny, cheerful and adorable and Michael was quite the opposite in the beginning. But later Michael *sigh* turned out to be a wonderful, sexy and a totally fantastic hero!
The story line and build up was good and wonderfully written that YOU JUST WOULD NOT WANT TO PUT IT DOWN!
If you want to read romance you MUST read this 'coz this book will make you feel like you are the main characters! This book will take you back in time. This book will make you laugh out loud. This book will make you fall in love (again)!

A delicious arranged marriage gone awry!

This is my second Julia London book. Both have been great stories and have each received a 5 star rating from me. London has a particularly charming ability when it comes to writing alpha males that are forced to reign in their strong personalities, grow up, and give of themselves. Her heroines are pleasant, innocent, and naive although a little too sweet for believability.
Michael Ingram, Marquis of Darfield, had sailed the seas at the age of nineteen, upon Captain Carrington's ship as a member of the crew. Also sailing on that ship was the captain's young daughter, Abigail (Abbey), known to all aboard as a wild, undisciplined yet charming child. Abbey had not seen Michael since that voyage twelve years ago. But she had held, in her heart and mind, dear memories of Michael and had eagerly awaited their future marriage.
Abbey's father, taking advantage of the young future marquis's financial problems, had loaned Michael, at that vulnerable age of nineteen, a large sum of money to repay his father's creditors. Michael's father was gambling away all the family's ancestral fortune and lands - thus Michael was desperate for the Captain's financial aid. Included in this financial contract was a betrothal agreement between Michael and the captain's daughter. This betrothal clause would be evoked only if Michael had failed to repay the Captain in full at some future specified date. Since the signing of that agreement, at least ten years ago, Michael had amassed a fortune himself and had repaid all of his father's debts. Michael, now Marquis of Darfield, had essentially forgotten the old agreement since all debt had been paid off. However, Captain Carrington had not been totally upfront with the young man all those years ago. The captain had hidden a large portion of Michael's father's debts from him and, prior to the his death, had evoked the betrothal portion of the agreement. No matter what Michael attempted to do, he discovered he was truly bound by the contract and - most unhappily - was forced to marry the captain?s daughter, Abbey.
Abbey, blissfully unaware of Michael's hostility and hatred of the marriage agreement, sailed from America to England believing herself totally in love with her future husband. Her father had told her, through the years, how much Michael wanted the forthcoming marriage and the love he held for her. Abbey discovered, much to her horror, that Michael was not the willing bridegroom. Not only was he unwilling - he treated her terribly - hoping that she would break the agreement. However, idyllic in her belief that Michael would someday love her, she refused to break the betrothal and they married.
All of the above happenings occur within the first 57 pages of the book. Immediately after the rushed wedding, Michael leaves Abbey at one of his country estates and travels to another for an indefinite period of time. He is determined to make Abbey suffer tremendously for the enforced marriage. During this period of the book, Michael is a really mean guy. He treats Abbey with contempt, suspicion, hatred, and is out for revenge. Abbey, conversely, is an extremely naive young woman and seeks happiness despite Michael's attempt to make her life a misery. Not only is she naive, she is also sweet - a little too sweet. One of my two complaints about The Devil's Love is her character is too sugary. She is seen as such an innocent and draws everyone to her with her never-ending optimism and enjoyment of life. It makes her character appear as unrealistic - she is too super-sweet with too many talents for one person.
The interaction between the leads is excellent although they are at odds a lot of the time. Just when we think Michael can get no meaner, Abbey begins to stand up for herself and he begins to reluctantly respect her and more reluctantly finds he is strongly drawn to her. Yes, love develops even in this big mess of an enforced marriage. However, I began to get uncomfortable about halfway through the book. I saw all of the signs of The Big Misunderstanding lining up and dreaded it. This was the second complaint that I mentioned earlier. The Big Misunderstanding was very, very big and it took a lot of the pages for it to be resolved. However, this book does deserve it's five star rating because London does a wonderful job of writing this portion of the book. I was caught by surprise, more than once, as the events unfolded. Although I was able to sense the upcoming misunderstanding, I was not able at all to guess how it would eventually be solved. The story is vastly entertaining. I eagerly consumed each page and every time I had to put it down - I enthusiastically resumed reading.
You will find this love story at times heartbreaking and at other times exciting and fresh. You will want Michael to get his comeuppance more than once as well. The chemistry between the leads certainly is vibrant and warms the pages. The actual sensual scenes, although fairly frequent, are somewhat tame and rate about a 3.0 to a 3.5 out of 5.0 (see More About Me for rating guidelines).
The Devil's Love is the first in a series followed by Wicked Angel. I read Wicked Angel first and although I probably would have preferred only slightly to read them in order, they are truly stand-alone books. I loved each book on it's own merits although I could have picked up on a few situations a little more quickly in Wicked Angel if I had read The Devil's Love first. However, in order or not, this is a great two book series that I wholeheartedly recommend.

Sometimes you get into reading romance novels, and it gets tedious and monotonous. You get jaded and wonder where all the good authors have gone. You know...where's that FEELING you used to get? Well, thank goodness for Julia London. This is one of those books that makes you remember why you still read romance novels. I read Wicked Angel just to make sure that it wasn't a fluke. And that was great, too! Ms. London, I eagerly await your next book.

About the Author

Rolf Behling holds a diploma in physics from the University of Hamburg, Germany. During more than 30 years in the medical industry he has held many positions, including department head of tube technology development, global project coordination manager, global innovation manager, head of marketing and field support for X-ray tubes, department head for X-ray tube development, project manager, and process physicist. The first spiral-groove-bearing X-ray tube was developed under his leadership. He currently heads the Philips Group for Advanced Development of X-ray Tubes and X-ray Generators at Philips HealthTech in Hamburg. He is a part-time lecturer at the University of Hamburg and has written numerous patents and publications in vacuum technology and medical imaging.

I have never seen a book dedicated to x-ray sources ...

I have never seen a book dedicated to x-ray sources. It definitely fills a huge gap in scientific literature. This book is very comprehensive. It covers everything from the history to the deep technical details(Stuff you didn't know but were afraid to ask). The authors insight into future trends seems to be very insightful. I believe this book will be an industry standard for many years to come. If I was a rich man I would buy copies for all my nerdy friends.

About the Author

David Joseph Roger Cristaldi graduated in Electronics Engineering at the University of Catania in 2005. In his thesis, developed at STMicroelectronics, he studied low-power design methodologies for liquid crystal display drivers. In 2006 he obtained the Italian qualification for the engineer profession and in the same year he was admitted to the Ph.D. course in Electronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, and Control of Complex Systems. His current research activity concerns analysis and modeling of electromagnetic-interference effects on Sigma-Delta analog-to-digital converters. Dr. Cristaldi received the Ph.D. degree in 2009.

Salvatore Pennisi received the laurea degree in electronic engineering in 1992 and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 1997, both from the University of Catania. He joined in 1996 the Department of Electrical Electronics and Systems Engineering (DIEES), University of Catania, as an Assistant Professor and he was appointed an Associate Professor in 2002. Since then, he has been engaged in scientific projects in collaboration with national and international academic and industrial partners. His main research interests include circuit theory and analog design with emphasis on low-voltage and current-mode techniques. In this field, he has developed several building blocks and unconventional architectures of operational amplifiers. More recently, his research activities have involved multi-stage amplifiers with related frequency compensation, data converters and the analysis of high-frequency distortion in analog circuits such as feedback amplifiers, oscillators and filters. He published over 60 papers in international journals and more than 120 contributions in conference proceedings, he is the co-author of the books CMOS Current Amplifiers (1999) and Feedback Amplifiers: Theory and Design (2001), both edited by Kluwer Academic Publishers, and has written an entry in the Wiley Encyclopedia of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Dr. Pennisi is senior member of the IEEE since 2004 and is a member of the IEEE CAS Analog Signal Processing Technical Committee. He currently serves as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems-Part II: Express Briefs.

Francesco Pulvirenti graduated in Electronic Engineering at the University of Pisa, Italy, in 1989. After the military service, he joined STMicroelectronics, Castelletto (Milan) site, in 1991 and then he moved to Catania site in 1993. He started working in the Industrial and Peripheral Division developing Smart Power ICs for Industrial Applications, Linear Regulators, Switching Mode Power Supply and Power Management for Industrial, Mobile Phone, Battery Charger and Computer Applications. In 2001 he moved to Display segment to manage the design of new Drivers dedicated to Liquid Crystal Display Applications for portable equipments and in 2004 he was appointed Design Director of the Display Division. Since 2007 he is working in the Industrial and Power Conversion Division to define and develop new products for Photovoltaic Applications and he is currently managing a team of about 30 people as Business Unit Director. Francesco Pulvirenti holds 32 patents on Analog and Smart Power ICs in the USA, he has 4 patents pending and he is also author or co-author of 8 papers on full custom ICs.

A chilling Book

An interesting look at what makes a man like Chris Barnard tick. A chilling experience to see how a man can put human suffering out of his mind in order to experiment on humans when he was no longer satisfied with using animals. A man adrift, unable to secure bonds on earth with wife, children or co-workers, Chris does write with surprising honesty about what drove him to do the things he did (like attaching a second head on a live dog just for fun!). An interesting read if you have the stomach for it.

About the Author

Dr. Charles B. (“Chuck”) Corbin, PhD, is professor emeritus in the School of Nutrition and Health Promotion at Arizona State University. He has published more than 200 journal articles and has authored or coauthored more than 90 books, including Concepts of Physical Fitness, Concepts of Fitness and Wellness, Fitness for Life, and Fitness for Life: Middle School and Fitness for Life: Elementary School, all winners of Texty Awards. Dr. Corbin is internationally recognized as an expert in physical activity, health, and wellness promotion and youth physical fitness. He has presented keynote addresses at more than 40 state AHPERD conventions, made major addresses in more than 15 countries, and presented numerous named lectures. He is a past president and emeritus fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology, a fellow of the North American Society for Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance Professionals, an ACSM fellow, and a life member and honor fellow of AAHPERD. His awards include the Healthy American Fitness Leaders Award from the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition (PCFSN) and National Jaycees; Distinguished Service Award of the PCFSN; and the Honor Award, Physical Fitness Council Honor Award, Hanson Award, and Alliance Scholar Award from AAHPERD. He received distinguished alumnus awards from the University of New Mexico and the University of Illinois. He served for more than 20 years as a member of the Advisory Board of Fitnessgram and was the first chair of the Science Board of the PCFSN. He was a member of an Institute on Medicine (IOM) committee for youth fitness testing. He was selected to the National Association of Sports and Physical Education (NASPE) Hall of Fame. Guy C. Le Masurier, PhD, is a professor of sport, health, and physical education at Vancouver Island University (Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada). He has published numerous articles related to youth physical activity and physical education and coauthored the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) Physical Activity Guidelines for Children. Dr. Le Masurier has given more than 30 research and professional presentations at national and regional meetings. He reviews research for numerous professional journals and has contributed to Fitness for Life, Fifth Edition, and the Physical Best Activity Guide. Dr. Le Masurier is a member of AAHPERD, NASPE, ACSM, and Canadian AHPERD. He is also a research consortium fellow of SHAPE America.

Contributing author: Karen E. McConnell, PhD, a professor at Pacific Lutheran University, is a certified health education specialist (CHES) and has taught at the university level for more than 15 years in areas related to health and fitness education, curriculum and assessment, and exercise science. Good, but needs work.

A great book this is, with realistic goals for exercise and nutrition. It doesn’t say that every kid can be a jock, because every kid can’t. It defines fitness as being able to do the most with the least effort, so in a nutshell it means that fitness is being able to use your body to do what you need. But it also says that fitness-demanding jobs are in decline, so fitness is now more of a concern for average cubicle-slaves.
There’s good advice here for starting out, especially if you’re sedentary, and it shows you how to use small steps to getting in shape. It warns against fad diets and fad machines, because they don’t work. The ab-master, ab-roller- ab-vibrator, Nordic Track, Soloflex; they were advertised with beautiful, muscular models, and bought by desperate nebbishes who wanted a quick fix to a long-term problem. I should know, I was one of them, and my Nordic Track didn’t help. I should’ve just gotten rid of the TV and walked to school.
The problem with this book is the target audience. It focuses mostly on kids, but what about the adults? People who have to drive an hour in each direction and sit at a desk all day are in a sedentary trap. What about construction workers work their knees and shoulders hard all day? What kind of fitness advise is there for them? Another problem is the photos; they’re all of beautiful young men and women. No acne, flabby bellies, fat thighs, fat butts, etc. I would be wary of showing this book to teens, because seeing all this perfection can make them hate their bodies. Not every teen has beautiful hair and a great tan. It also doesn’t take into account that some schools have the kids in there until 5pm, and they’ve cut out gym class. It also doesn’t factor that when a school has P.E. it usually favors the jocks and consists of “here’s a ball go play.” The non-athletic kids are left out, picked last.
