Jane Kamerling, L.C.S.W. is a Diplomate Jungian Analyst and member of the Chicago Society of Jungian Analysts and Interregional Society of Jungian Analysts. She is a faculty member of the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago and has designed and co-directed the Clinical Training is a senior analyst who has lectured both nationally and internationally on the relationship of Jungian psychology to culture, mythology and religion. She has a full time analytical practice in Chicago. Fred R. Gustafson, D. Min. is a Diplomate Jungian Analyst (Zurich) and member of the Chicago Society of Jungian Analysts. He is a senior training analyst with the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago and a clergy member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on subjects related to Analytical Psychology and religion. Easy is East and West is West - or is it?

Jane Kamerling and Fred Gustafson are two Jungian analysts who have taken the time and energy to address the ever-growing misconceptions between the cultural/religious dichotomies of the Western and Islamic worlds, misconceptions that seem to be driving us closer to all out widespread combat. And there really is no reason for this perception as the core of the spiritual beliefs (often ignored by both realms of people) is essentially the same message as these two scholars make obvious. Yes, a background in Jungian psychology helps the reader fully appreciate the development of ideas presented here, but both of these authors make it a point to explain the various aspects of Jungian psychology in easy to grasp explanations - a courtesy to the reader that makes this book far more universal in appeal than others who have attempted the same examination.

In the long introduction to their book they lead us into their thought processes: 'History provided the cultural conditioning which forms individual and cultural identity. In Jung's psychology, anything that threatens or conflicts with that ego position, whether it is the ego identity of an individual or a nation is called the shadow. The content of the shadow is mostly unknown and includes all the ideas and concepts that seem foreign and threatening to the ego or its identity. When the ego is threatened by the contents of the shadow, this content is projected outside of oneself onto another. The object of the projection is known as "the Other." "The Other" becomes a magnet for uncomfortable shadow projections casting all the negative darkness onto an unknown foreign, place, or culture. Having a historical knowledge reduces the possibility of projecting shadow. History reveals common themes across cultures, emphasizing humanity's similarities.' And later they go on to say 'This book hopes to direct our attention towards gaining that awareness. First...we will try to give a concise overview of history that is relevant to the issues of today. Included is the making and falling of nations, the development of Islam and the economic influence as the world interconnects through the pressure of globalization. We introduce a psychological framework, described by Carl Jung, in which to view the individual within the world and then expand that paradigm by explaining the psychology of collective groups and societies. Using symbols that are bigger than life and that hold collective psychologies, we try to illustrate the dynamics presently being played out between East and West. The book dances between archetypal images that express our common emotional views and experiences, on the one hand, and the facts that surround and feed the archetypal manifestations on the other.' "It is easier to see shadowy political machinations in the Middle East, for example, than to struggle with the same issues in the West.'

From this overview the authors address misconceptions that few understand. In a chapter dealing with the dress of Islamic women we discover the concept behind the veil form the instruction of Muhammad to today, since that appears to be a signal of repression of women to Western perception. 'Western attitudes identify the attire of Muslim women as an expression of repression, oppression, and male dominance by a backward and primitive people. This book uses the veil as a metaphor of the unseen influences that affect both the actual oppression and abuse of women worldwide as well as repression of unconscious material. Though the veil is literally worn by women in the Islamic world, this book emphasizes that the oppression of the feminine resides in both East and West. The veil, as a garment, is not the issue, but what it has come to represent in the West through Western misunderstanding and misinterpretation.'

It is this genuinely concerned approach to erase misconceptions 'between' and instead look at the greater collective thinking that unites us all that the authors find their greatest success. In addition to all the opening of windows shuttered by mutual misunderstanding, another aspect of this valuable book as an open dialogue about the history of the world's religions and a very fine glossary of the terms about Eastern thought that clarifies many misconceptions. This is a most valuable guide to approaching the situation of the barrier between the 'us' and the 'them' that figured so prominently in 911 and in other events throughout the world. There is more information within the covers of this fine book that will help us understand ourselves and the universe - and as a sidebar, it is a terse explanation of Jungian psychology! "Lifting the Veil" is an ambitious, thoughtful examination of the veil worn by Muslim women as a symbol for the tensions between the Middle East and the West. Kamerling and Gustafson provide a succinct, carefully researched history of Islam followed by a survey of the many underlying causes for the cultural complexes that threaten to possess both Islam and the West. The authors extend the idea of a complex in Jungian Psychology to the realm of a complex affecting an entire culture. They use the figure of Sheherazade, the woman who tells "One Thousand and One" stories over as many nights that ultimately proves to be the deliverance for two kings caught in the throes of the repressed feminine. Sheharazde becomes the vessel through which the feminine is unleashed and "Lifting the Veil" proposes that we must once again recover the life-affirming qualities of the repressed feminine if we are to overcome the cultural complexes that have divided Islam and the West.

In "Lifting the Veil" of ignorance about Islam and the meaning of the veil, other veils are also lifted. This is a psychologically rich book that explores the current polarization between West and Middle East from a fresh and needed perspective. Great Material

There are both adherents and critics of Kenneth Hagin and with good reason. His words challenge some and inspire others as they walk out their faith. If the truth of God is reality to you then you have the right to claim what He paid for you to possess. That is not to say that you can "name and claim" everything but it does give rise to the question of what is meant by inheritance from a Christian perspective. I would recommend this book to everyone I know.

If you have not picked up a Poison Apple book, I highly recommend them. They are paranormal for tweens - very appropriate for the age. Think of Cupcake Diaries with a twist - in this case, vampires.

Emma-Rose Paley is quite different from her parents - not just in the way she looks but in personality as well. She has always been pale with jet-black hair, but she also detests sunshine and garlic. Is this proof enough that she is a...vampire?

Great-aunt Margo is coming for a visit, and the two of them have quite a lot in common. During the visit odd things occur - like animals mysteriously dying in the park - and Emma-Rose witnesses strange occurrences herself - is this proof that Great-aunt Margo is a vampire as well?

Tween readers will be delighted with this mysterious tale and will ultimately be surprised with the outcome. If you've not taken a bite out of these books yet, you should add them to your mound of reads.

My Creepy Book

I loved this book. It is just so like me! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, and my heart was swelling and I was smiling at all the right moments. It was also really funny, and it was so easy for me to just... list the clues and figure things out on my own! This book had me hooked the entire time! People had to yell my name more than once to snap me out of this book. It made me feel like I was in the book more than any book has.

This Totally Bites was an amazing book! It was full of suspense and surprises! I couldn't put this book down. There is a girl named Emma Rose who thinks she is a vampire, but is in for a pleasant surprise. She makes friends that she never thought she'd make and has trouble with her other group of friends. This Totally Bites is an awesome books that you should definitely read!

About the Author
Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) is India's greatest modern poet and the most brilliant creative genius produced by the Indian Renaissance. As well as poetry, he wrote songs, stories and novels, plays, essays, memoirs and travelogues. He was both a restless innovator and a superb craftsman, and the Bengali language attained great beauty and power in his hands. As a poet, novelist, musician, and playwright, Tagore reshaped Bengali literature and music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As author of Gitanjali and its 'profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse', he became Asia's first Nobel laureate by winning the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature. Tagore denounced the British Raj and supported the Indian Independence Movement. His efforts endure in his vast canon and in the institution he founded, Visva-Bharati University. Two Tagore songs are the national anthems of Bangladesh and India: 'Amar Shonar Bangla' and 'Jana Gana Mana'. Ketaki Kushari Dyson's acclaimed edition of his poetry, I Won't Let You Go: Selected Poems (Bloodaxe Books, 1991; second enlarged edition, 2010), was a Poetry Book Society Recommended Translation.

A concise report of Tagore's life precedes what can be considered, altogether with Radice's, the most beautifully rendered translations of Tagore by someone else than himself. Don't let this book go neither... God: preserve the translator's life and competence as long as You did for the original author.

I love all of this poet's writing! I have since I was a teenager and I am in my seventies now. His poems are life and spirit affirming, just beautiful and truly uplifting. This is a great book to warm the heart and soul.

I like the title of the book, because I was looking for a diffrent translation of the bengali poem "Jete nahi debo".

I liked the translation, mainly because of the simplicity and very modern english, not old english. I like it because I felt that it's very close to the original poem, and it was easy for me to express, while I was reciting the poem.

In 1991, after working for Apple Computer and Microsoft, Steve founded Perspection, Inc., which writes and produces software training. When he is not staying up late writing, he enjoys playing golf, gardening, and spending time with his wife, Holly, and three children, JP, Brett, and Hannah. Great Guide

This is one of the best Excel books I've used. The full color step-by-step guides really make navigating the new ribbon system a lot easier. I am aware of groups that hate the new menu setup, as a result of this book I've been able to get over my frustrations of adapting to a new format. I've also learned some neat shortcuts and tips that have made me quicker and much more efficient. I'm quickly becoming an office resource amongst my peers how are just muddling through without a book. I would recommend this to anyone from a novice excel user to a seasoned hand in previous versions of excel trying to find their way.

Great Book for Getting Your Feet Wet with Excel 2010

This book delivers on its promise to provide answers quickly in a visual step-by-step format. You find a topic you want information about and there is a short explanation and concise step-by-step walk through of using that topic. This is great for people getting their feet wet with Excel 2010, or for those who need a quick reminder.

The 556 pages of the book are chock full of great information. This is not an encyclopedia covering everything in Excel, which allows Johnson to maintain a professional tone and not overwhelm the reader. It would be a great help if Amazon would include the Table of Contents in the information available from its page about the book, as the Table of Contents is the most useful list of what is covered in the book.

The book is not encyclopedic, and the index/Table of Contents runs into a familiar issue in referencing topics. Page 91, for example, discusses how to display calculations with the status bar. It is a strong discussion of a very useful tool, but I'm not sure I'd look for it under "Displaying calculations with the status bar" or "automatic calculations," as the reference appears in the Index. But once you've read what Johnson has to say on the topic, the index makes sense.

Great reference book

This is a great Excel reference book. If you are familiar with older Excel versions, you will find this book very valuable when moving to 2010. Also if you are planning a migration, you will find a lot of resources, examples, and real life cases on how to do it.

The layout, colors, step by step instructions make it easy to read and enjoyable. I recommend it.

About the Author
Margaret Weis is the co-creator of the Dragonlance world. She has authored or co-authored several New York Times best sellers set in the Dragonlance world. Weis lives in Wisconsin.

Tracy Hickman has been writing and exploring fantasy and science fiction since the 1970s. Tracy eventually became a New York Times bestselling author (with Margaret Weis) of numerous series such as Dragonlance, the Death Gate Cycle, Darksword, and Rose of the Prophet and other series. Together with his wife Laura, Tracy has created Dragonlance and Ravenloft games and, more recently, their own fantasy series, The Bronze Canticles. Song of the Dragon and Citadels of the Lost are the first two novels in The Annals of Drakis. Tracy and Laura live in the Salt Lake Valley of Utah and have four grown children.

Another great novel!

The second installment of the popular Darksword novels takes Joram, Saryon, Mosiah, and Simpkin through an unexpected twisting and turning of events. Our party leaves the Sorcerer's camp for the city of Merilon, where Joram plans to seek his birthright. On the way, they meet Prince Garald of Sharakan, who takes the time to help Joram in a way no one has yet been able to. Merilon brings many hardships for the group; Saryan is suffering with internal conflict to the point he is constantly ill, while Mosiah feels out of place and is eager to leave the city. Joram is eager to seek his fortune, but falls in love in the midst of everything. Simpkin, of course, is doing what Simpkin does best -- being himself.
Doom of the Darksword is an intriguing sequel, rife with action, suspense, and deception, including the amusing Illusion of a Thousand Mosiahs. A riveting climax is built through the event commerorating the Dead Prince and culminates in the unexpected Turning to Stone. Joram learns his true birthright and Saryan finally finds peace. Weis and Hickman have written another brilliant novel, one that touches the heart and leaves you begging for more.

Joram, Saryon, Mosiah and Simkin enter the enchanting and magical city of Merilon. They have left the technologists, and Blachloch's corpse, behind.

En route, the dead man, the suffering catalyst, the devoted companion and the baffling magician are diverted to the enemy kingdom of Sharakan where they meet, befriend, rest and train with Prince Garald and his handpicked Cardinal Radisovik. It is here that we are given a glimpse at the true power of the darksword and the real nature of Simkin.

Returning - for some a first visit - to Merilon where Joram hopes to discover and claim his birthright is the bona fide beginning of the story the first part of which is the serendipitous meeting of Joram and Gwendolyn at the gates of the capital city. Matters, however, seem to be falling apart almost as soon as they appear to be improving. Much is revealed in discussions, investigations, at the castle and at Bishop Vanya's surreptitious hall where he passes judgment. Many positions are weakened and many others' seem to be lost forever.

As an aside, shrewd readers might have noticed several similarities between this land and earth. While names like Gwen, Lord Samuels and Maria or plants like dahlia and honeysuckle might be easy giveaways, the mention of an ancient history crammed with weaponry and a medical reference to Hippocrates are also clues to the same. Elsewhere, a discussion of salvation through divine grace versus as a reward for deeds, which occurs early in the Volume, hints at the personal beliefs of co-author Tracy Hickman. He is, of course, not only one of the fantasy genre's leading authors, but also a devout follower of LDS.

With much explained and the story moving fast the reader is left with a cliffhanger sure to be resolved in the customary third book of a fantasy trilogy. Triumph of the Darksword (Darksword Trilogy, The) will impart how the balance of power will be apportioned.

A satisfying read.

If you like stories which contain a plot within a plot within a a plot along with several subplots, then this is your kind of story. All the plots contribute to the story line, and gradually the author braids all these strands into one neat fabric.
The only downside to this book is that you really need to read the prequel, and then plan to read the next book in the trilogy to learn how all the various strands come together in a satisfying conclusion.
Over all, a very satisfying tale, that keeps you engrossed, right up to the end, with no nauseating "lessons" in "green living", "liberal morality", "conservative morality" or politics that often show up in current writing.

The approach taken by the authors (and used in their classes at MIT for many years) differs from the conventional one in several ways, including an emphasis on the development of the covariant derivative and an avoidance of the use of traditional index notation for tensors in favor of a semantically richer language of vector fields and differential forms. But the biggest single difference is the authors' integration of computer programming into their explanations. By programming a computer to interpret a formula, the student soon learns whether or not a formula is correct. Students are led to improve their program, and as a result improve their understanding.

Gerald Jay Sussman is Panasonic (formerly Matsushita) Professor of Electrical Engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT and the coauthor (with Hal Abelson) of Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs (MIT Press).

Jack Wisdom is Professor of Planetary Science in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences at MIT. Sussman and Wisdom are the coauthors of Structure and Interpretation of Classical Mechanics (MIT Press).

Will Farr is a CIERA Fellow at Northwestern University.

Excellent book!

This is a great book! In the same spirit of Structure and Interpretation of Classical Mechanics -- in order to really understand differenitial geometry, you write programs to do the computations. Sussman and Wisdom were very careful and start from the very basics up to applications on relativity and electrodynamics. There is a long appendix on notation and two shorter appendices, one explaining the basics of Scheme (the programming language used in the book), and another with a minimalist introduction to tensors.

Intriguing use of Scheme to study core concepts of Differential Geometry

A solid account of Differential Geometry to study core concepts. Having computational assets embedded in the theory is an excellent idea. Suggestion: The use of Scheme might be supplemented by Clojure as a online resource. The appendix of tensors is a good refresher. Clearly aimed as an introductory text, it succeeds admirably.
