Dr Franks then settles into a number of chapters on the physics and chemistry of the frozen state. This is crucial to a good understanding of freeze drying and especially formulation development for freeze drying, and there can be few people who could discuss this topic more eloquently or thoroughly than the author. The strengths of this work are unsurprisingly in the thorough treatment of the frozen state and an understanding of the amorphous state both in terms of formulation and freeze drying process design and also the discussion of the study/prediction of product stability. This book is a very useful and thorough overview of the process in operation during freezing and lyophilisation and should be read by all those who are interested in freeze drying and pharmaceutical formulation design. I certainly will be returning to it as an excellent summary of these important issues.

About the Author

Pradip Kumar Sadhu holds bachelor, post-graduate, and Ph.D degrees in electrical engineering from Jadavpur University, West Bengal, India. Dr. Sadhu has 18 years of experience in teaching and industry. Currently, he is a professor and head of the Electrical Engineering Department of the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, where he has guided a large number of doctoral candidates and M.Tech students. He holds four patents, has been published in several national and international journals and conference proceedings, and is principal investigator of a number of government-funded projects.

Soumya Das holds a B.Tech from the West Bengal University of Technology and an ME from Jadavpur University, West Bengal, India. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D with the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. He is also an assistant professor in the Electrical Engineering Department of the University Institute of Technology, Burdwan University, West Bengal, India, where he has guided a large number of B.Tech and M.Tech students. Previously, he was an assistant professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at the Bengal Institute of Technology and Management, Santiniketan, India.

Don't Leave Home Without It

As Director of Neuroradiology at a Harvard teaching hospital for many years, I have been responsible for recommending texts for residents to begin their study of my subspecialty. When this book was first published, it happened to be the year in which our subspecialty offered its own examination for certification. Because I was interested in finding a text to provide a current survey of the field, I bought this book. Little did I know how comprehensive this text was- a true "bang for the buck". The coverage of the field, including neck imaging, is remarkably thorough and up-to-date, considering the current edition is 6 years old.
The only minor deficiency is a paucity of illustrations, but I believe a pictorial work book keyed and correlated to this text has now been published.
What makes this text unique is the authors' wry sense of humor, with "zingers" appearing unexpectedly- they literally wake you up and provide encouragement to finish even the most challenging chapters. The final sections, which include a unique chapter on how to interpret MR and CT images, as well as lists of differential diagnoses, are real gems.
In summary- as Karl Malden said- "Don't Leave Home Without It". The book is small enough to carry, and a valuable resource from which to learn while one works in the radiology reading room.

A good book, but not for people with low attention span...

First of all, this is a good book. It covers most of the topics a 1st year radiology resident needs to know. However, it wanders too much on shallow comments and -supposedly funny- jokes that only distracted me from my study. I'm a person who struggles to keep her concentration, I have a poor attention span, if you will, so when I was reading something complex (as most of the subjects in neuroradiology are) and then the authors ended up with a lame joke, it was as if everything I just read became lost. That may be 'my' limitation, as I mentioned, not a real flaw of the book, but I think people who, like me, need a more 'clasically' structured and 'traditionally' written text, should be warned that this volume of the Requisites series isn't the most adequate to suit their way of study.

Neuroradiology - an excellent review

Neuroradiology is a must for every Radiology resident. It is an excellent introduction to the complex and fascinating subject of neuroradiology. Unlike most medical writing, the book has humor and is "conversational" keeping the reader involved. It covers not only the anatomy and pathology involving the brain and spinal cord, but also the orbit, sinuses, and neck region. Strongly recommend to every radiology resident and any budding neuroradiologist. Awaiting the 2000 edition!

Clearly written, informative and entertaining view of the influence of our names on lives

A fascinating study of how forces influence the people that we are. I remember following biorhythms when I was in college, avoiding tests and other important tasks when the three rhythms converged at their lowest. I know of a test developed after WWII that was fine tuned over years to accurately determine our personality based on our selection of adjectives and adverbs describing how we see our selves and again by how we believe others see us. I saw the concrete results of weighing choices for these systems. So imagine to my delight, finding a book that analyzes how our names – a commodity not usually chosen by us – influence the outcome of events in our lives as we are channeled down the ‘river of life.’ What is really interesting, as this book points out, is how we can actually select a different name for ourselves to alternately influence events in our lives going forward or perhaps, even more importantly, how the selection of the right name for our children can positively (or negatively) influence events in their lives as they go forward. I found the book clearly and logically laid out along with the system defined and discussed followed by all the Personalities that are associated with the name analysis. Finally there are sample worksheets included at the end of the book to help in performing the analysis. In all, the book is informative and entertaining, even if you choose not to use its wisdom in the choice of a name for yourself or your kids, you can use the information to make wiser choices in the future.

Very inspiring book, a must before giving your child a name

I purchased this book after I've heard talking about it, how, for example the fact of taking on your spouse’s name could negatively affect your marriage. I got very intrigued by the story and wanted to learn more. So I bought the book, and started immediately reading it.
I couldn't stop! I always have been interested in numerology, and understanding what’s in my name helped me a lot to gain self-knowledge. But this stuff is quite different! It's not about numerology in the classical sense; it goes much and much deeper.
After I calculated my names, I got to the description of different numbers which represent about 64 personalities. It was so unbelievably accurate! I could literally copy the whole description exposing my character, talents, behavior, and shadow side, leaving only 2 or 3 words out that didn’t resonate. (and who knows even that may be accurate, perhaps I’m not aware yet of that what I didn’t recognized). This confirmed a lot what I already knew about myself intuitively, and deepened the confidence of my own truth. It also opened my eyes to things I didn’t realize that they were going on.
What I found even more interesting was that some patterns would repeat themselves. I changed my name(s) in the past, due to emigration and so on. But even after the change, it turned that my changed birth name and family name stayed the same numbers as my spouse’s name, and the secondary traits of my mother’s family name, for example, would correspond to her husband’s name AND to MY husband’s name.
Is this a hint that we subconsciously continue to take the same, sometimes not so healthy decisions, even if we consciously want to make new, positive choices?
The book is very elaborated and rich in information. It covers lots of interesting things. I have to admit that I needed to read some parts different times, to really understand it (and I probably need to reread it again), but that’s okay. It absolutely is one of the most inspiring books I've read last few years, and I really recommend it. I also decided to take a private consultation from Lyon to go even deeper.
I think it’s also a must, before giving your child a name (What happens, for example, when you give your child the name of your ancestors?)

I liked NAME REALITY and I'm still liking it months later!

If you are a numerologist or have played around with numerology and find it accurate and interesting then this will be a good book to add to your knowledge collection. I found it interesting and useful and relatively easy to implement into your life if you need to make some changes or want to see better results in all areas of your life. It is a completely different system than Pythagorean numerology. But an ancient and valid system that I think will be a nice addition to learn and use to help oneself and others. I have made a few changes in spelling my name and gotten rid of the 'u' vowel in my first name and feel good about having done so, although not legally yet. If you don't do anything with this book but read it and use it to SEE if it improves your own life it is worth the cost of admission to enter the world of this unusual ancient system that was used by the elite families in Chaldea, Egypt, and Middle Eastern Countries thousands of years ago, just to see what you have been missing and learn about 'one more thing' that was kept from us through out the ages that shouldn't have been! I liked this book enough to buy a second one and gift it to a numerologist friend! Blessings!

About the Author

Susan North is a curator in the V&A Fashion, Textiles and Furniture Department. Jenny Tiramani devised and produced patterns for the book with Melanie Braun, Luca Costigliolo, Armelle Lucas, and Claire Thornton. They are all founding members of the School of Historical Dress and worked together in the wardrobe department of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre between 1999 and 2005.

An amazing book for serious period dressmakers, 17th century

This is an amazing book. The curators of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London have picked treasures from their collection from the 17th century, (1600's) and virtually deconstructed them, included the pattern pieces and lace prickings if necessary, along with period stitches, so you can duplicate it. They show pictures, and then highly closeup details from the picture so you can see every stitch, how many plies in the thread, all that, at important points on the garment. They also go into some detail about the difference between a tailor and a seamstress. The pieces are x-rayed so you can see what went on inside the garment, to see repairs, corrections, etc., as well as fragments of the lace involved if it was metallic. They also include contemporary paintings of the garment discussed, or similar, so you can see it in context. It includes a 'robe', jacket, hat, shoes, supporters for the lace collars that framed the face from the rear, a falling band, all sorts of things. If you need/want to duplicate 17th century women's garments, this is the book for you, along with volume 1.

Excellent reference

A continuation of 17th Centry Women's Dress Patterns Book 1. Many of the articles of clothing are originally described by Janet Arnold.
Thiis book contains patterns and assembly notes for a gown in mulberry-colored velvet (it was mostly "recycled" in the 18th or early 19th century), a couple of jackets, bodices, a pair of stays, supporters for flat ruffs, and collars edged with flat lace, A brief discussion of "small articles", such as purses, busks, a hat and shoes round out the book.
As with the previous book, the authors have included detailed pictures - including x-rays - of the articles and step-by-step instructions as to how the garments were put together.
I am anxiously awaiting the next book on the 18th Century clothing from the V&A collection.

A Must Have Book for Those Interested in 17th Century Historical Garments and Costume Design

Fantastic! I bought this book thru Amazon while taking advantage of their special offer of 30% off of the most expensive book in my shopping cart - and this book was it. I have bought other V&A books while visiting the UK back in 2000. I see that the V&A has improved on their books. This book has drawings on garment assembly as well as pattern pieces. Amazing attention to details such as embroidery patterns along with embroidery and sewing stitch instructions. One must remember that the sewing machine did not exists (invented in1750's, 1st sewing machine design in 1790's, not widely used and practical until 1830's) during this period and everything was sewn by hand. Even had a couple of shoes thrown in there. Had instructions on braiding string for a purse or pillow. Had construction and description of a picadil sculpted firm shape that sits behind the neck. Also shown samples and construction of collar supporters. Some garments were X-ray and/or disassembled followed by pattern piece reconstruction and assembly of the piece. I'll study this in more detail over the weekend. Finally a book worth buying!
