About the Author

Rolf Behling holds a diploma in physics from the University of Hamburg, Germany. During more than 30 years in the medical industry he has held many positions, including department head of tube technology development, global project coordination manager, global innovation manager, head of marketing and field support for X-ray tubes, department head for X-ray tube development, project manager, and process physicist. The first spiral-groove-bearing X-ray tube was developed under his leadership. He currently heads the Philips Group for Advanced Development of X-ray Tubes and X-ray Generators at Philips HealthTech in Hamburg. He is a part-time lecturer at the University of Hamburg and has written numerous patents and publications in vacuum technology and medical imaging.

I have never seen a book dedicated to x-ray sources ...

I have never seen a book dedicated to x-ray sources. It definitely fills a huge gap in scientific literature. This book is very comprehensive. It covers everything from the history to the deep technical details(Stuff you didn't know but were afraid to ask). The authors insight into future trends seems to be very insightful. I believe this book will be an industry standard for many years to come. If I was a rich man I would buy copies for all my nerdy friends.

About the Author

David Joseph Roger Cristaldi graduated in Electronics Engineering at the University of Catania in 2005. In his thesis, developed at STMicroelectronics, he studied low-power design methodologies for liquid crystal display drivers. In 2006 he obtained the Italian qualification for the engineer profession and in the same year he was admitted to the Ph.D. course in Electronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, and Control of Complex Systems. His current research activity concerns analysis and modeling of electromagnetic-interference effects on Sigma-Delta analog-to-digital converters. Dr. Cristaldi received the Ph.D. degree in 2009.

Salvatore Pennisi received the laurea degree in electronic engineering in 1992 and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 1997, both from the University of Catania. He joined in 1996 the Department of Electrical Electronics and Systems Engineering (DIEES), University of Catania, as an Assistant Professor and he was appointed an Associate Professor in 2002. Since then, he has been engaged in scientific projects in collaboration with national and international academic and industrial partners. His main research interests include circuit theory and analog design with emphasis on low-voltage and current-mode techniques. In this field, he has developed several building blocks and unconventional architectures of operational amplifiers. More recently, his research activities have involved multi-stage amplifiers with related frequency compensation, data converters and the analysis of high-frequency distortion in analog circuits such as feedback amplifiers, oscillators and filters. He published over 60 papers in international journals and more than 120 contributions in conference proceedings, he is the co-author of the books CMOS Current Amplifiers (1999) and Feedback Amplifiers: Theory and Design (2001), both edited by Kluwer Academic Publishers, and has written an entry in the Wiley Encyclopedia of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Dr. Pennisi is senior member of the IEEE since 2004 and is a member of the IEEE CAS Analog Signal Processing Technical Committee. He currently serves as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems-Part II: Express Briefs.

Francesco Pulvirenti graduated in Electronic Engineering at the University of Pisa, Italy, in 1989. After the military service, he joined STMicroelectronics, Castelletto (Milan) site, in 1991 and then he moved to Catania site in 1993. He started working in the Industrial and Peripheral Division developing Smart Power ICs for Industrial Applications, Linear Regulators, Switching Mode Power Supply and Power Management for Industrial, Mobile Phone, Battery Charger and Computer Applications. In 2001 he moved to Display segment to manage the design of new Drivers dedicated to Liquid Crystal Display Applications for portable equipments and in 2004 he was appointed Design Director of the Display Division. Since 2007 he is working in the Industrial and Power Conversion Division to define and develop new products for Photovoltaic Applications and he is currently managing a team of about 30 people as Business Unit Director. Francesco Pulvirenti holds 32 patents on Analog and Smart Power ICs in the USA, he has 4 patents pending and he is also author or co-author of 8 papers on full custom ICs.

A chilling Book

An interesting look at what makes a man like Chris Barnard tick. A chilling experience to see how a man can put human suffering out of his mind in order to experiment on humans when he was no longer satisfied with using animals. A man adrift, unable to secure bonds on earth with wife, children or co-workers, Chris does write with surprising honesty about what drove him to do the things he did (like attaching a second head on a live dog just for fun!). An interesting read if you have the stomach for it.

About the Author

Dr. Charles B. (“Chuck”) Corbin, PhD, is professor emeritus in the School of Nutrition and Health Promotion at Arizona State University. He has published more than 200 journal articles and has authored or coauthored more than 90 books, including Concepts of Physical Fitness, Concepts of Fitness and Wellness, Fitness for Life, and Fitness for Life: Middle School and Fitness for Life: Elementary School, all winners of Texty Awards. Dr. Corbin is internationally recognized as an expert in physical activity, health, and wellness promotion and youth physical fitness. He has presented keynote addresses at more than 40 state AHPERD conventions, made major addresses in more than 15 countries, and presented numerous named lectures. He is a past president and emeritus fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology, a fellow of the North American Society for Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance Professionals, an ACSM fellow, and a life member and honor fellow of AAHPERD. His awards include the Healthy American Fitness Leaders Award from the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition (PCFSN) and National Jaycees; Distinguished Service Award of the PCFSN; and the Honor Award, Physical Fitness Council Honor Award, Hanson Award, and Alliance Scholar Award from AAHPERD. He received distinguished alumnus awards from the University of New Mexico and the University of Illinois. He served for more than 20 years as a member of the Advisory Board of Fitnessgram and was the first chair of the Science Board of the PCFSN. He was a member of an Institute on Medicine (IOM) committee for youth fitness testing. He was selected to the National Association of Sports and Physical Education (NASPE) Hall of Fame. In 2009 Dr. Corbin was chosen for the Gulick Award, the highest award of AAHPERD. In 2013 he received the Hetherington Award, the highest honor of the National Academy of Kinesiology.

Guy C. Le Masurier, PhD, is a professor of sport, health, and physical education at Vancouver Island University (Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada). He has published numerous articles related to youth physical activity and physical education and coauthored the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) Physical Activity Guidelines for Children. Dr. Le Masurier has given more than 30 research and professional presentations at national and regional meetings. He reviews research for numerous professional journals and has contributed to Fitness for Life, Fifth Edition, and the Physical Best Activity Guide. Dr. Le Masurier is a member of AAHPERD, NASPE, ACSM, and Canadian AHPERD. He is also a research consortium fellow of SHAPE America.

Contributing author: Karen E. McConnell, PhD, a professor at Pacific Lutheran University, is a certified health education specialist (CHES) and has taught at the university level for more than 15 years in areas related to health and fitness education, curriculum and assessment, and exercise science. She has written or contributed to over a dozen book chapters and texts, including the teacher resources for Fitness for Life (fifth and sixth editions). She is a recipient of the Arthur Broten Young Scholar Award and has received the University Professional of the Year Award from the Washington Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance for contributions made to state standards in health and fitness. She enjoys running, having completed 38 half marathons and one marathon. As a resident of the Pacific Northwest, she enjoys participating in most outdoor activities.

Good, but needs work.

A great book this is, with realistic goals for exercise and nutrition. It doesn’t say that every kid can be a jock, because every kid can’t. It defines fitness as being able to do the most with the least effort, so in a nutshell it means that fitness is being able to use your body to do what you need. But it also says that fitness-demanding jobs are in decline, so fitness is now more of a concern for average cubicle-slaves.
There’s good advice here for starting out, especially if you’re sedentary, and it shows you how to use small steps to getting in shape. It warns against fad diets and fad machines, because they don’t work. The ab-master, ab-roller- ab-vibrator, Nordic Track, Soloflex; they were advertised with beautiful, muscular models, and bought by desperate nebbishes who wanted a quick fix to a long-term problem. I should know, I was one of them, and my Nordic Track didn’t help. I should’ve just gotten rid of the TV and walked to school.
The problem with this book is the target audience. It focuses mostly on kids, but what about the adults? People who have to drive an hour in each direction and sit at a desk all day are in a sedentary trap. What about construction workers work their knees and shoulders hard all day? What kind of fitness advise is there for them? Another problem is the photos; they’re all of beautiful young men and women. No acne, flabby bellies, fat thighs, fat butts, etc. I would be wary of showing this book to teens, because seeing all this perfection can make them hate their bodies. Not every teen has beautiful hair and a great tan. It also doesn’t take into account that some schools have the kids in there until 5pm, and they’ve cut out gym class. It also doesn’t factor that when a school has P.E. it usually favors the jocks and consists of “here’s a ball go play.” The non-athletic kids are left out, picked last.
