About the Author
David C. Funder is Distinguished Professor of Psychology and former chair of the department at the University of California, Riverside. Winner of the 2009 Jack Block Award for Distinguished Research in Personality, he is a former editor of the Journal of Research in Personality, and a past president of the Association for Research in Personality as well as the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. He is best known for his research on personality judgment and has also published research on delay of gratification, attribution theory, the longitudinal course of personality development, and the psychological assessment of situations. He has taught personality psychology to undergraduates at Harvey Mudd College, Harvard University, and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and continues to teach the course every year at the University of California, Riverside.

Perfect intro to Personality Psych

Product is great introduction of personality psychology and how it is measured. I won't be selling this one back. Written using vernacular that is easy to understand whether you have a background in psychology or not.

this book is as good as it gets

Used this for a large personality class in Winter 2013. I think the book is as good or better than anything else out there. I searched for a good text for my upper division university students, and chose this one rather than the one I used last year that studied theorists and their stories. I decided it is best to use an overview book because personality is getting so complex, it is perhaps the most complex topic in psychology. I also teach abnormal psychology and find the personality course more complex, because abnormal psych can rely on the DSM-IV as a teaching paradigm. There is not central paradigm for teaching personality, so it's a complex topic. The author takes so many different views on each topic that it can be challenging reading. Yet that is the gift he gives in this book -- that he is ethical and fair. He doesn't state opinions that are not true, not even half-truths. He gives as many possible views on personality as possible and does not get on the psychological/empirical high-horse and pretend personality research is clear. For example in the chapter on culture and personality, he doesn't claim that culture determines personality in any specific ways, which would be tempting to do if an author was in to oversimplification. Rather, he shows how it's complex and that is the beauty of personality. This is advanced scholarly learning--to hold back and not get to the point in a simplistic way, because getting to the point would be inaccurate. As a teacher I balanced the text with lecture information that included some fun and solid "points" and take-away learning, so the students had something solid to hang on to. In that way I think the students had a balanced class experience, and the reviews were good. Students who actually read the book were well-informed by the end of the quarter and could talk intelligently about personality.
I held back one star, because I do think this book needed more animation, pictures, images. I understand he took these out, but it does lack visual stimulation. But again, the writing is thorough. And --don't forget, this book is $60 cheaper than other books with identical information perhaps presented less well. Choosing texts that not inflated in terms of price is important, so I am glad they sell this book at a reasonable price. Also this book is used at so many universities, it's not hard to resale this book.

Very little actual content, and biased

I used this book for a college course on personality, and didn't get anything from it. It's very long and winding, and there is little to no justification for points made. I didn't feel like I could trust the author to deal with topics evenhandedly, after seeing in several points that he had left out key sides to a debate and presented one (often not even the predominant one) as wholly correct - I would have just assumed this as trustworthy if I hadn't had previous background on these topics, and wonder what he did to the presentation of others I hadn't encountered before.

Not worth the time, if you have a choice don't buy this. If you do, make sure you read something else on the topics presented or you could end up with a very warped view. There are lots of great textbooks that delve into similar issues and do so much more concisely and robustly.

Must Read for any Aspiring Developer...

A great book for understanding the reasoning behind Microservices and the problems they solve. It is a a well organized book with references to other books that allow you to dive deeper if you want. Microservices are everywhere. Everyone talks about Microservices at major conferences all around the World but they are not new. Big players like Amazon and Netflix have been building distributed systems using this architecture since for many years.This book's focus is on the patterns involved with implementing MicroServices. Thus, this book does a fantastic job at explaining these concepts. This book never intended to provide concrete implementation details for coding the actual architecture.A book for further information and additional knowledge.

Reading this book helped me to understand microservices in a deeper level

A lot of books about microservices put unnecessary contents in which always confuse readers. This book has really simple outline and easy to understnad. What i like the most is this book helped me to choose which pattern to use step by step when it comes to microservices architecture. I liked the method of dividing the application into a set of services where each service has its own function. Another thing I like about this book is it contains useful pictures in it. It helped me to focus on the topic and understand the concept better. I'd definitely give it a Go.

but that's what I'd expect from a book like this. It's a text on programming

A very dense outline of Micro service architecture. It lays out a plan for structuring software, very important when building a complex system. Without proper structure, one problem can cause the whole house of cards to come crumbling down. I see some complaints that the book is too systematic in its writing, and fair enough, but that's what I'd expect from a book like this. It's a text on programming, not Gone With the Wind, lol. I thought it did a good job of setting out what it is meant to do.

The Undisputed Best

This is a home study course, but if you do it every day for as little as fifteen minutes a day, you can read over 1,000 words per minute in three to six months. You need to be able to read at a high school level reasonably well, but even if you don't (!) it will take a little longer.

Peter Kump is the successor of Evelyn Wood, the founder of Speedreading. I have tried dozens of speed-reading courses, and they all have serious flaws. I tried another book which claimed to be "the best speed-reading course ever developed", but inside the author admitted that most people will only be able to read up to 800 words per minute at max. (I read at 600 wpm, so that wasn't much of a jump for me.)

Kump's book delivers in every way. It needs daily practice, but a maximum of fifteen minutes a day will get you soaring. Kump says it will not happen as fast as you want, but sooner than you expect. The book makes no fantastic claims, because it says slow progress in the beginning will lead to rapid speeds for EVERYONE. And it works, I, a college kid in New York, have read over 1,000 words per minute with Kump's at-home book.

He doesn't have gimmicks and more garbage to sell at the end. He doesn't make false promises. This is the only speed reading book to get and you will ever need. The others fall short. Kump has taught thousands and thousands, and he relates his classroom experience wonderfully. He reassures you with anecdotes of students who started out slow, but then soared at 2,000 words per minute. He humors you with stories of high school children finishing a chapter in two minutes when their teachers give the class twenty minutes of in-class reading time. When the student successfully answers all question, the teacher remarks that the student "must have read it before class". (He's only funny in a professorial way, not at all a comedian. He seems like he would be a serious, but helpful, teacher in class.)

It's also the cheapest out there. If you want to buy more than one book on speed-reading, I suggest you buy this one alone. I would be shocked if you felt you needed another one after going through this one. Just trying to save you money here. You can read my other reviews to test my biases. I know I sound like I'm like Peter Kump's son hawking daddy's book, but I like to give honest, passionate reviews. Live long and prosper.

BEST SPEEDREADING BOOK EVER!! 6 STARS!!

I will make this review concise for you slow readers, who have yet to learn the magic powers of speed reading.

Throw away all you think you know about reading faster. Many people do not start a speed reading course because they think they will not enjoy reading faster. YOU WILL ENJOY READING FASTER. People do not begin a speed reading course because they think that they will not be able to comprehend what they read. HOW ABOUT 80-90%+ COMPREHENSION?

I have studied various methods and techniques of speed reading. I have taken the Howard Berg course, the Photo Reading course, and have read several other books about speed reading. I have also taken the Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics course (which this book is heavily based off of seeing that the author is the former director) Nothing has helped me more than this book. This book gives you a step by step (1 chapter a day) time line and drills so that within 6 weeks you too can be reading 3-8 times faster (750-2000wpm+ some 5000+!) WITH GREATER COMPREHENSION AND RECALL. This book teaches you how to read everything (similar to Evelyn Woods Reading Dynamics course). It teaches you how to read fiction, nonfiction, text books, newspapers, as well as correspondence, and mail. One thing that I do have to add as a sidenote: if you are more of a visual or auditory learner i recommend the Evelyn Woods Reading Dynamics, and Evelyn Woods Learning Dynamics courses (very cheap on ebay) only because I know that it may be difficult for ADHD prone individuals like myself to have the executive function to sit down and do the drills everyday. It actually took me over 2 years before i finally sat down and did the drills and went through the book, but I AM EXTREMELY HAPPY I DID. My comprehension and love for reading has gone up dramatically.

Fantastic - It really does work - you get out what you put in

From 200 to over 1300 words per minute with retention - it's pretty impressive.
The good thing is that the techniques in the book really do produce results above and beyond what you ever expected...the bad news is that it does not happen over-night, it takes good bit of dedication and consistency. You have to really want it to complete this course of 36 chapters.

The fact that it does NOT happen over-night is something that you should be really happy about - because it's like body building - only it's mind building !

For those willing to put in the work, the rewards will be great and you will not regret it....and you can keep your newly developed skill for the rest of your life !

Throughout the course I reached practise rates in the mid to late 2000s with a final rate of 1900 wpm.

The best part is finishing a book in one day - it's something I've always wanted to be able to do - and now it's a reality.

I cannot recommend this book enough....and on so many different levels.

Buy it !

Remember one thing though - with any rapid reading the faster you go the resolution of the material does drop - like going from colour to black and white - but the important details are still there.

The course teaches you many different gears to be applied to reading for different rates from meadium, to fast, to really fast so you can pickup and go and adjust as required - along with a lot of different exercises on recall to improve comprehension as well as study oriented reading exercises to increase retention, recall and comprehension.

It really does have it all.

Beautiful (but not what's advertised)

Okay, so this arrived at my doorstep and wasn't what I expected. It's NOT the graphic novel that apparently preceded the film, as described by Amazon's blurb. Instead it's a lovely book of images from the film, and a copy of the film's script. Now I need to order the actual graphic novel, but I'm really glad I have this too! It's just the coffee table art book I've been waiting for, and a great reminder of the film's visual beauty.

(By the way, the same reviews are appearing under both books. I don't know what that's all about. I'm going to try ordering the graphic novel and hope I receive the right thing!)

Not what I expected, but I liked what I got...

Having originally missed The Fountain when it made its short theatrical presentation, I finally got a chance to see it, and after which I was compelled to do two things:

1.) Upgrade to the Blu-ray version, as this was a movie that deserved to be watched in the highest definition possible - not only is the story compelling but the cinematography is beautiful.

2.) Read the graphic novel that Aronofsky had adapted his screenplay into after his initial effort to get the movie made fell through.

Having said this you might be wondering why I'm writing a review for this item, as getting a 'picture book' wasn't part of one of those two things I was compelled to do. The answer to this question is, after briefly reading through the product description it was my understanding that this was a hardbound rerelease of the graphic novel to complement the movie. It was my surprise then, when I got my brown box from Amazon and removed the shrink wrapping from the contents within, that I found not a graphic novel but a book filled with stills from the movie. Initially I was distraught, as I had just paid $20 for the wrong book, and my first instinct was to return the item.

Having settled down a bit, I decided to give the book a chance and slowly thumbed through it. From the first few pages I found myself drawn into the artistically render adaptations of stills from the movie. The photographs in this book do a wonderful job of visually representing the thematic elements of the movie, and are simply gorgeous to look at. Never having seen this movie, one could pick up this book and find sunken into every page pictorial representations of the emotional context that made The Fountain so wonderfully appealing.

It was also my great surprise to find embedded in the back cover of this book a copy of the screenplay from the movie. Flipping through the screenplay was exciting, as it allowed me to see the manuscript from which the movie was born. Toward the end of the screenplay there is also a nice summation by Aronofsky about the thematic elements of the movie, and how they relate to the journey in which the protagonist undergoes. This would definitely be a book you would set on the coffee table when you invite friends over to watch The Fountain. While not a necessary addition, a nice addition nonetheless for fans of the movie.

Great book

What I really liked about the book is that the author really knows her stuff. She's not only giving you diagnostic signs but she's giving you the remedies and solutions took, and it's here where her depth of knowledge comes shining through. A well written, well organized and easy to understand book. Let's hope we see more publications from her in the future.
