Getting Real, Volume 4

Although there are more songs in the first three real books (The Real Book: Sixth Edition, The Real Book - Volume II (C Instruments): C Instruments 2nd Edition (Fake Book), The Real Book - Volume III: C Instruments, 2nd Edition) than I'll ever learn to play in two lifetimes, when this book came out, I rushed to get my copy. The reason is simple: with the majority of the standards available in the other three books, here we start getting into some more "fringe" or hard to find material, but even more important than that, this volume includes a number of (what I consider) glaring absences from the first volumes, as well as more recent material that probably didn't make it into earlier volumes because of copyright issues and such. Some examples of the first category of songs include: Days of Wine and Roses, On Green Dolphin Street, and Just Friends (among others). Some from the latter category include all the Mancini and Gershwin material: Baby Elephant Walk, Peter Gunn Theme, A Foggy Day, and Summertime. The paper quality is exceptional as ever, and although the font seems a little smaller, it is still easy to read with space enough for notes and notations while learning and playing the tunes. As always, the spiral bound format is easy to handle and convenient. I'm sure there are lots of owners of one or more of the first three volumes who are thinking that this one won't add much to their repertoire, but like the three volumes before it, I'm confident in recommending it and giving it a five star rating, as I expect there are plenty of songs here that any musician will enjoy having quick and easy access to. There really is something for everyone and that makes this book a winner.

Wonderful! And what a bargain!

If you think these guys might be slowing down a little after 3 volumes, think again. The good folks at Hal Leonard have stuffed this book with 400 pages of top-notch standards and jazz tunes, with no duplications from prior volumes.

Expect nice changes, good calligraphy and paper and a GREAT selection of songs. Just sit down at the piano and easily play through these tunes. You'll quickly gain new-found respect for some chestnuts and discover some (many) new favorites. Some of the tunes include two-staff harmonies and written-out bass lines, and others are helpfully annotated.

Spiral bound (!) and ridiculously priced. Highly recommended.

It feels like almost a lifetime ago when THE REAL BOOK (*THE* as in Volume 1) was sold "behind the counter" at select music shops.
Buying it had an air of naughtiness, yet signified both the hipness of the music shop in carrying it, and legitimacy of you as a musician in buying it.

The book, of course, was not perfect, in fact, early editions were laden with ridiculous errors, whereas as time past, sheets began to improve.

Some years back, Hal Leonard took over the book -- legitimizing it, putting it out at a reasonable price, and further developing the series.

Lead sheets, by nature, are merely blueprints of given arrangements -- to declare any leadsheet "perfect" would be silly, but to say that some fakebooks are more functional than others, in my opinion would be a fair statement. To that extent, this book deserves 5 stars, in that, whether or not I agree with every change, it definitely, like V.1-3 of the series, is "on the go" functional.

Of course, Volumes 1-3 always existed, IV to the best of my knowledge is new; however, it includes many tunes that were omitted from earlier versions of the legal edition. DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES, ON GREEN DOLPHIN STREET, DOODLIN', A FOGGY DAY, NIGHT AND DAY, FLAMINGO, JUST FRIENDS, RELAXIN' AT CAMARILLO (Parker), SUNNY and SUMMERTIME are included... as are excellent sheets to numerous tunes that have appeared in other fakebooks... Most welcome by myself are Mr. Lucky, Mr. Wonderful, Our Day Will Come, That's Life, Parker's Mood, Azure Te, and Going out of my Head.

There are some fun as hell tunes too, like THE PINK PANTHER, THE "IN" CROWD, The Themes to both I Love Lucy and Johnny Carson, Peter Gunn, The Sermon and more.

Tunes ranging from Porter Standards, Modern Jazz, Bebop and even some pops, for example "I Shot The Sheriff" are included, also a beautiful ballad, which in my opinion James Brown used to knock the heck out of "IF I RULED THE WORLD" are included.

Sorry, I can't name them all.

All in all -- this is a fantastic addition to, what I believe is THE must have fake book collection for musicians who don't have photographic memory and a repertoire of 100s/1000s of tunes, and also need sheets that are readable and functional enough to be pulled on the spot.

FYI -- most players will be aware of this, but a FAKE BOOK, unless otherwise specified, does not contain scores or lyrics (*in most cases.) These are sheets that contain the chord changes and melody in an easy form to allow gigging musicians to be able to perform and arrange them on the spot. If you're looking for written out sheet music, the REAL BOOK is not for you... and definitely don't purchase it, and embarrass yourself by writing a bad review. Every semi-pro, pro and a billion amateur but Jazz trained musician will be laughing their butts off at you.

This was quite an interesting read. Although I did enjoy it, I wish it had a bit more of a story line. There was a lot of sex. I mean A LOT. That was great, however, I would have loved to gotten to know the characters a bit more. Especially the bad boy Nikolai. I wanted to learn a bit more about his background and why he did the things he did.

About the Author
Rahma Al-Mahrooqi, PhD, is the Director of Sultan Qaboos University's Humanities Research Center. She is also an Associate Professor of English at the same institution, where she has worked for 21 years. She has taught a variety of courses in language, communication, research, and sociolinguistics, always seeking to inspire and transform her students by example. She has coordinated tertiary English courses and an ESP program for SQU's College of Science and, for almost four years (2006-January 2010), she was SQU's Language Center Director. Dr Al-Mahrooqi has published widely on English language teaching and learning in Oman with major focus areas in teaching reading, literature, and English communication skills. Currently, she is engaged in funded nationwide research in various areas of language instruction. In addition, under the Humanities Research Center, she is carrying out research on identity, cognition and emotion and their relationship with language learning. Salah Troudi is an academic at the Graduate School of Education at the University of Exeter. His research interests and publications are in critical applied linguistics, curriculum studies, English as a medium of instruction, teaching approaches in TESOL, and the use of technology in language classrooms. He is the Director of the EdD TESOL in Dubai and the editor of a number of journals in TESOL and language education.

My father never claimed that he was more courageous than the man fighting alongside him. He did not singlehandedly win a battle, nor did he receive any recognition beyond what many received after the war. The extraordinary acts of courage and compassion described in this book were performed by ordinary people, from both sides of the war. They send a powerful message that the potential for such acts is not restricted to just a few “heroes”. We all have that potential and we all must believe in the potential of others. We all must believe we can create bonds to cross enemy lines. The challenges dad faced during WW2 helped define, and test, his character. His stories of courage and of failure in the midst of the chaos have served as moral guideposts and cautionary tales for me throughout my life. My brothers, sisters, and I were undoubtedly shaped by the way he would punctuate his fatherly advice with many of the stories recounted in this book. Even as a child, I could relate to the many life challenges his wartime predicaments would illustrate. As I began writing this introduction it occurred to me that while these stories had an impact on us, we rarely discussed them. This made me wonder how many others have relatives who fought in war have been similarly shaped by their stories. How many other people can find their core values rooted in similar war stories they heard growing up? While my father participated in the Veterans History Project to document his experiences, there are undoubtedly many others who did not have the chance to document their experiences and valuable life lessons. My hope is that the families of those silent soldiers will find their voice in these stories.

A Generous Gift of Remembrance

One thing that struck me in reading this book were the names of the guys involved in the events that happened over 60 years before the memoirs were written. The inclusion of the names speaks to the deep impressions that must have been established by these men and the events they shared. Many of us who have not lived through such experiences often think of them in a remote or dispassionate way, unable to imagine the nitty-gritty of a soldier's day-to-day. This short memoir changed that for me. In his way, Mr Dorris takes you there. It is like a dream in the way scenes and people blend and change but to know that it is real makes one shudder about committing anyone to such an experience without the most noble of causes. And throughout there is a demonstrated faith that minimizing suffering is the goal, even in war. However difficult it might have been be to walk again down the memory path of these experiences, the author should know what a gift he has given to those of us who he allowed to walk with him. This book shows a generosity of spirit in the author and offers a step in the direction of peace.

By far the best memoir of WW2 I have read -- EVER

If your father or grandfather did not write down his memories for you and your children to read you must read this book! There are a couple of chapters that will make your jaw drop and there is one chapter when they were one of the first to discover a death camp that you will never ever be able to forget. For that scene alone history teachers everywhere should require students to read. I love history and I have never been so touched by such a short memoir, EVER. There are many books that are longer and maybe better written but I can assure you none explains more clear what happens to people in war and shows how someone can give a gift that thanks you in a way you can never forget.
