About the Author
Julie McNamara is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education at California State University, East Bay in Hayward, California. She has also served as Mathematics Specialist with TeachingWorks at the University of Michigan. Julie spent two years supporting elementary and middle school teachers as a fulltime designer and provider of mathematics professional development for Math Solutions, and continues to consult for Math Solutions part-time. She has also taught mathematics methods in the elementary credential programs at the University of California, Berkeley and at Saint Mary s College in Moraga, California. She is a former classroom teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her experience in the classroom led her to pursue graduate studies in the Development in Mathematics and Science program at the University of California, Berkeley, and to earn her master s degree and Ph.D. in mathematics education. Her research focuses on the teaching and learning of mathematics concepts that are foundational but considered "hard to teach and hard to learn."

Julie is co-author of Beyond Pizzas & Pies: 10 Essential Strategies for Supporting Fraction Sense, 2010, as well as Beyond Pizzas & Pies: 10 Essential Strategies for Supporting Fractions Sense, Second Edition, 2015. This is a great companion to beyond pizzas and pies

This is a great companion to beyond pizzas and pies. As a math instructional coach, I have found this to be the best resource for teaching fraction operations conceptually for 4th and 5th grade. The lessons are thoroughly explained and have proven to work very well with students in my title I school.

Drawing on ethnographic research, Bobby Benedicto paints a remarkably counterintuitive portrait of gay spaces in postcolonial cities. He argues that Filipino gay men’s pursuit of an elusive global gay modernity sustains the very class, gender, and racial hierarchies that structure urban life in the Philippines. Benedicto examines, for example, how practices such as driving enable the emergence of a classed gay cityscape, and how scenes of networked global cities engender discourse that positions Manila within a global system of “gay capitals.” And yet he also analyzes how the fantasy of gay globality is imperiled when privileged gay men from Manila, while traveling abroad, encounter Filipino labor migrants and come face-to-face with the exclusionary racial orders that operate in gay spaces overseas.

Unique in its methodological approach, Under Bright Lights employs affective, first-person storytelling techniques to capture the visceral experience of Manila and gay life in a third world city.

academic language with little enjoyment

I purchased the book because I hoped to read about real interactions between human beings. How they met, how their relationships developed and possibly ended. Instead the book is littered with half finished (or started) stories that illustrate abstract points about race and class while completely missing anything about how anyone lived or loved. But the biggest challenge to enjoying this is the author's desire to impress his graduate advisers with how many books he can quote. I'll summarize it for you. Most people, according to Benedicto, want to be rich and white. This might not be false, but it does not make for a pleasurable read. I hope he got a high grade for his thesis.

This is NOT the whole book. It's only the addendum and errata of the first edition. The whole book is about 600-700 pages depending on edition and reprint methodology; this is about a tenth of that!

Not what I was looking for. This is a small book and doesn't have any of the words I was looking for. i finally found the complete book An Etymological Dictionary of the English Language by
Walter W. Skeat, which has the same name but is a rather heavy book with lots of information in it.

This is the pinnacle of 19th century Philology. The edition with which I'm familiar refers to "indo-aryan" roots. Undoubtedly, some of Skeat's misconceptions have been corrected, but the wealth of information here is amazingly interesting reading for anyone interested in the whence of English
