Guide to Score Study for the Wind Band Conductor by Frank Battisti and Robert Garofalo is well written book that details a comprehensive method of score study. The authors conceived the text with the intention of filling a void of references on the subject. Most texts written about conducting go into detail about developing the physical skills of the conductor. Fine examples of conducting texts include Elizabeth Green's The Modern Conductor and Donald Hunsberger's The Art of Conducting. These references, while invaluable, have very few pages committed to the art of score study. Battisti and Garofalo in their surveying of young conductors discovered that most novices learn the technical aspects of conducting before they learn an approach to studying the score. These students, they discovered, rarely realize a score with interpretive intent. The young conductor typically consults recording references or bases interpretation on prior school band experience. The guide is written with the music education student in mind and is designed to provide valuable first hand experiences as well as a step by step process approach to score study.
Every chapter in the systematic process begins with a quote from a prominent historical musician. The statements provide the reader with a sense of induction into the greater world of music making as a scholar of the score. After a brief overview and introduction in chapter one, the second chapter introduces the initial step of becoming familiar with the score. An additional illustrative device called "A View From Within the Mind" invites the reader to read the thoughts of hypothetical conductor as he/she approaches the score for the first time.
The third chapter and second step in the method is to read the score at a tempo that will allow the student to hear the music without stopping. The reader is encouraged to permit their creative imagination to surface naturally. Score memorizing, utilizing the piano, or listening to recordings of the composition is discouraged. After this initial reading, the reader is advised to reflect on sections of the music in his mind without consulting the score. Application exercises are provided followed by thought provoking questions for self-evaluation and discovery.
The third step initiates the technique of intensely analyzing the score. Battisti and Garofalo give an exhaustive list of specific components of musical composition to examine. The conductor, after completing the detailed examination, assesses the overall structure of the work. The construction of the large form is studied in the context of the micro components. The authors then encourage the reader to develop a flow chart of the composition. An illustration of the process is provided using the Irish Tune score and excerpted analysis notes from the authors' hands.
The final step, described in chapter five, is a synthesis of the knowledge acquired from the application of the preceding sections. Tempos, phrasing, dynamics, color, texture, the composer, historical context, and the style period are all taken into consideration. The utilization of information synthesis to create interpretation is applied to the Grainger score. The hypothetical conductor returns and the final creative stage is demonstrated. The interpretive analysis of Irish Tune is included in a narrative and in the included full score. The chapter ends with a quiz for the reader and a summary of the entire score study process.

Battisti's book is easy to read and easy to apply to actual score study and conducting of a wind band. The inclusion of examples and organized charts makes score study a less daunting task, especially if someone is new to conducting and rehearsing a wind band.

Though the examples and text is aimed specifically toward wind bands, the contents of the book can be applied toward any medium-large size ensemble score, including string or full orchestras.

It has taken some adjustment, but Nita Graus has made quite a home for herself among the crew of the Wind Breaker. Word of her adventures with Captain Mack, Gunner, Lil, Cooper, and Wink has made the whole crew into living legends among the residents of the mountain towns of Rim, but in doing so it has also made finding safe harbor virtually impossible. Agents of the fug folk and those working on their behalf hide in every cloud and skulk in every shadow.

Only one town, a place called Lock, is willing to welcome the Wind Breaker into port. Most of the townspeople have already been shunned by the Fug Folk, and as such have little to lose in aiding and abetting the crew. Captain Mack, mindful of his advancing age and the risks he's had to request of his crew time and time again, has begun to plan for his retirement. Plans are swiftly derailed when the fug folk hatch a plan of their own, splitting the crew and locking Nita away in the floating prison known as Skykeep.

Skykeep is the second book in the Free-Wrench saga and continues to chronicle the adventures of Nita and her new crew as they continue to clash with the twisted figures who control the destiny of a continent.

It's worth the price of admission and then some.

I'm a very simple person, every time I read a book I ask myself some questions at the end. Was it worth the cost? When I finished the book was a i glad that I read it? I thought this book was a bargain at it's current price and I was was happy while reading the book and happy when I finished it. But I liked the first book in this series better. At the beginning of the first book the author wonderfully described Nita's job working in the volcano, that's what hooked me and caused me to buy the novel. The end of the first book i felt had a superior ending by not only tying those loose pragmatic ends together but by tying up those loose emotional threads and some how giving a firm foundation for more of Nita's thrilling adventures to come. Truly I felt the author had wrapped things up extremely well with the novel Free Wrench and better than 98 percent of the books that I've ever read, and I've read a lot of books. Also in Free Wrench, Nita's skills as an engineer were showcased to a greater degree and I always like the engineers in any story. Scotty from Star Trek was my favorite character. Mister Lallo just set the bar extremely high with Free Wrench and to me this book while wonderful just didn't quite match it. So I am being extremely unfair and only giving it four stars.

A strong novel in the Free Wrench world

Skykeep is a sequel to Free Wrench in many ways, with the same cast and set in the same world, but it’s also an independent story. Rather than maintaining the same narrator, all the crew of the Wind Breaker are given a chance to hold the point of view, allowing us to get to know them a lot better. I’d expected from the blurb I read to find Nita driving the rescue, but that’s not the case. Without spoiling anything, I can say that each member of the crew, including Nita, had a part to play, even Wink and the newest addition, Nikita (another aye-aye), while despite being one of the captured, Nita doesn’t let a simple thing like being held in a secret, impregnable prison stand in her way.

The reasons I enjoyed the Wind Breaker and its crew in Free Wrench are very evident here. The crew is full of ingenuity, strong in the face of any odds, and even if they have momentary lapses, no matter what, they have faith it will all work out–somehow. The crew isn’t a collection of geniuses, nor do they have unique skills absent from any other crew. What they have is persistence, creative thinking, and the willingness to work hard and be flexible.

These characteristics are part of the reason they make friends wherever they go. The other reason being how they respect the strengths in others and do not dismiss any out of hand even when, for example, they know there are no good fuggers. Ultimately, it’s the last that makes them good people. The same actions could have made them villains but their motivations, and how they go about things, are always solid and understandable. Even better, they’re capable of seeing the motivations driving others, something that leads to forgiveness when hatred would not be out of place.

There are half a dozen places where a line made me laugh, where a turn of phrase captured a situation beautifully, or where a comment speaks to a much deeper understanding of how things work than might be expecting in what is a romp and adventure. I’m avoiding specifics because they come within context that would give things away, but there are more levels to this story than the overt ones, something I always appreciate.

I can give one example of their unconventional thinking from the very beginning though.

The Wind Breaker is one of the few ships able to do their own repairs, thanks to Nita. She’s training the rest of the crew, a rather difficult task when the only one with technical expertise is focused on blowing things up rather than stopping them from doing so. It’s with this background that they arrive at the only port willing to do business with them because it has no fear of offending the Fug people because everyone there has already been ostracized. Nita’s skill in repairs is one of the things the Wind Breaker has to offer, and Lil volunteers to assist. None of that made me laugh though. Rather, it was Lil’s logic as she states if she has to learn this fixing stuff, much better to do so on someone else’s equipment. It’s not a mean statement to her. It’s pure logic and a perfect demonstration of her character, something a far sight from heroic but more pragmatic than villainous.

Though I’d been looking forward to a continuation of Nita’s adventures, the broader focus on the whole crew was lovely and led to a strong novel without any risk of repetition. I am most definitely joining the chorus of those asking for more.

A worthy sequel and a promising future for the Free-Wrench series

I have been a huge fan of Joseph Lallo for a couple of years now. His new releases are always on the top of my reading list when they come out. However to be honest I was Pleasantly surprised with Skykeep. I liked it so much more than I ever expected I would.

To get some context. This is the second book in the Free-wrench series. I had read Free-wrench when it came out and I liked it but it did not hold the same place in my heart as some of his other works. So when I heard about the sequel here I was expecting about the same. Boy am I glad I was wrong.

Joseph really takes the world and characters that he created in the first book and fleshes it out even more. This book was just all around fun and exciting. The characters, the places, the world building. I read it over a couple of days and it was one of those books that was just painful to lay down because I wanted to know what was going to happen next.

Well done on this one. Certainly worth your time. If you like Adventure, steampunk, pirates or if you just like good solid story telling and great characters then this is the book for you.

Part 1, "Water Effects," teaches you how to design water surfaces, underwater ambiance and kinetics, and gushing water. In part 2, "Space Effects," you learn how to create space ambiance, such as the sun and star fields, and you also create science fiction effects, such as a force field and an alien planetary sky. Part 3, "Atmospheric and Terrestrial Realism," teaches you how to create foggy and snowy weather conditions and natural disasters, such as lava flows. The fourth and last part, "Explosions and Pyrotechnics," shows you how to create, among other things, a mushroom cloud, a missile launch, fireworks, the glow of a rocket engine, black billowing smoke, and steam. Although the authors use helpful step-by-step instruction and plenty of screen shots, you'll want to know 3D Studio MAX fairly well to get the most out of this book. Older work, but compatible still .. missing the CD, waiting for the CD

The book is for an older version of 3DSMax, but it is nice (for a newbie). However, it does depend upon the CD .. and in this case the CD has not yet shipped, as the envelope for it in the book was empty.

I am awaiting the vendor's choice of delivery; download would be fine. I certainly hope they can locate the information, as the lessons in the book all hinge on having the files from the CD!

Excellent book on special effects

This is an excellent book for learning special effects. Don't bother buying Max 3 Effects because this book has WAY more effects, better quality and better content-range of effects, it's way better value for your money, and it's entirely applicable to the new versions of Max, not too much has changed.
It tells you how to make cool water effects, build land geometry, do space effects, some cool weather effects, and more. If you just want to make terrain and water this book will be a great help. Or if you want to make a space scene this book has some great help in that area too to easily make starfields, planets, etc.
The quality here of what you can make (for the most part) is completely professional looking. It's full color all the way through as well which is a bonus for the price of the book. I've been into computer graphics since I was a kid, and although I'm just starting to properly learn Max now after using it for over a year, this book is a great help to get some cool effects easily.
You'll want to have a basic knowledge of the Max interface, because the book is very succinct. Also just by reading it and playing with Max you'll learn new things about the Material Editor and other areas that will help you overall doing 3d Animation.

Very useful book

I really find this book is a lot of fun. Not every effect is perfect, however, they don't need to be. I almost never use the effect the way they are defined in this book, but the great thing about this book is it gives you many starting ideas, from which you can tweak and change to come up with your own brilliant effects. If you have no imagination and just want to copy effects, then maybe this book isn't for you. If however you love to explore and experiment, seeking new and dazzling artistic effects, but would like a few clues how to get started, then this is a great place to begin. Let's face it, Max is huge and complex and there is a dizzying array of choices. I find it really useful to see how Carbonaro does it, then take his ideas and add my own. This book is for the artists, not the technicians.
