Born in Hawaii of Japanese descent in 1922, Takaezu worked actively in clay, fiber, and bronze for over sixty years. Influenced by midcentury modernism, her work transformed from functional vessels to abstract sculptural forms and installations. Over the years, continued to draw on a combination of Eastern and Western techniques and aesthetics, as well as her love of the natural world. In particular, Takaezu's vertical closed forms became a symbol of her work, created through a combination of wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques that allowed her to grow her vessels vertically and eased the circular restrictions of the wheel. In addition to her art, Takaezu was renowned for her teaching, including twenty years at Princeton University.

This beautifully illustrated book offers the first scholarly analysis of Takaezu's life work and includes essays by Paul Smith, director emeritus of the American Craft Museum, and Janet Koplos, former senior editor of Art in America. Jack Lenor Larsen, a textile designer, author, collector, and advocate of traditional and contemporary craftsmanship, provides a foreword.

Fitting tribute

Although this book was written before Toshiko Takaezu's death, its publication almost coincided with it. There will no doubt be other books about this great potter, but I cannot imagine a better one. This is full of beautiful pictures of her serene work. I haven't started reading it yet because I have been so immersed in the beauty of the photography. I was fortunate to attend one of her workshops some years back, and this book takes me back to watching her create one of her incredible large pots.

Captivating Humour and Insight into an Amazing Country he Knows so Well

Anyone who has any experience with Greece, or for that matter even those with none, will find Matt's way of telling stories totally delightful. He has that rare gift of writing without pretences, sounding like he is just reminiscing and talking to a friend. Actually like talking to a friend while having an ouzo, which affords that occasional philosophical musing and intuition as to the deeper meanings of a given situation. He has a neat and dry sense of humour, and I have enjoyed his memoires of life in Greece like a modern day Henry Miller.

I first discovered his writings on his website http://greecetravel.com, where I found myself lost in story after story. His only fault perhaps is that you quickly forget what exact boat schedule you were looking for as you travel down his long and colourful memories of life and travel in all parts of Greece.

Great summer read!

An irresistible combination of travel stories, every-man philosophy and comedy make this book a great read. Often laugh out loud funny, Matt's wry outlook on life will engage the reader from the first chapter to the last. To sum it up, this book won't teach you the secrets of spearfishing but after reading it, you will feel you've have gained a new friend!

An often laugh-out-loud recounting of the author's adventures and relationship with Greece over the years. I enjoyed the unpretentious, honest and insightful telling of his personal stories of Greece that made me feel I was listening to a great storyteller of the oral tradition.

She read my mind ...

Since rededicating my life three years ago, things have gone crazy. I am so thankful
for A. J.'s offering of what God has obviously directed her to write.
I swung by a Christian Bookstore in Bakersfield, on my way to Yosemite. I found "Messy Faith" on a sale stand and couldn't resist the title, cover and her opening thoughts. It's hard for me to get hooked in a book. I read a few paragraphs and found
myself pulling over to read a chapter.
What a relief. It seems so simple. She challenges us to be honest in our walk with Christ. When we do, things can get messy. I have been describing the past few years to my friends by saying, it's like God cleaning out my garage. There's so much there, He's deciding what stays and goes. In the meantime, the driveway is full of junk I don't need any more. Thank you, A. J. for writing the book that became my vacation this week. My intention was to do a lot of other things, I spent it with our loving God, letting Him use you to show me some very important things.

Renewing and Refreshing

During a vacation from an intense job/ministry with the homeless, I desired to read a good book that would be medicine for my weary soul. Messy Faith, was the right medicine, as if prescribed by Jesus to renew and encourage my faith. Not only is A.J. a highly gifted writer but she also has deep penetrating insights (and wit) into our human condition and God's transforming grace. Her authenticity and transparency about her own journey and brokenness (how refreshing), in the context of sound Biblical wisdom, makes Messy Faith a must read for all who truly dare to live by grace - and just maybe (like for me) you might also trust and love Him a little more. I am re- reading the book and look forward to reading more from A.J. Gregory!

Messy and Wonderful

The cross constructed out of duct tape on the front cover of "Messy Faith" is what drew my attention to this book. With disarming and refreshing honesty, A.J. Gregory paints a real life, sometimes gritty, sometimes hilarious journey of faith. Wherever you are in your walk of faith, this book is an incredible guide that essentially explores success and failure along with issues of addiction. Simply put, whenever any person of faith leans on anything other than God first, addiction can take over, lead to sin and away from God. Read this book and then read it again. It's simply wonderful.
