Fun read

Barken's All the Lonely Boys in New York has it all. This fast read is action packed. It is colored by fantastic descriptions of New York, entertaining dialogue, and eccentric characters who will inspire a full range of emotions. Eight years since the Credit Crisis, during which the book is set, aren't we still asking many of the same questions that Barken raises through his fiction? The ideas entertained by the group of former marines and activists who gather in the secret apartment on the Upper East Side convey the depth of outrage that people still harbor concerning the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the corporate greed and corruption that has resulted in so much inequality.These questions are as pertinent now as they were then, and Barken masterly steers his readers through a night of terror, highlighting the toll the economic downturn has taken on the young generation. Myles, the narrator, says it best: "My poor sick country, my tired friends," he remarks when he finds himself on a crowded subway packed with rain-soaked and downtrodden passengers. "The bootstrap felt broken and that broke our hearts. All we had ever tried to do was lift ourselves up..." Indeed the American dream appears bankrupt...

Following up on a thread he began in his stories collection, "This Year in Jerusalem," Barken brings the saga of Myles and Ari to an excellent conclusion. The theme of loneliness plays out in an honest voice and is neatly tied together with themes of apology and forgiveness. This is one thriller that will leave you thinking... Grab it and pass the word along!

Essential Read

Don't miss this book! I read Barken's collection of short stories, "This Year in Jerusalem" about a year ago. A great read: good travel stories, nice prose, and beautiful drawings by Diana Muller... I knew the story of Myles and Ari wasn't finished and that there was a novel on the way from this author, but I never expected such a powerful thriller packed with thoughtful social and political reflections. Barken takes a big risk, positing a potential explanation for an unsolved terrorist attack, and suggesting that the culprit(s) was homegrown. Through crisp dialogue Barken captures the emotions that were running high in 2008 as we spiraled into the credit crisis. Whether you've read Barken's previous work or not, the actors in All the Lonely Boys in New York are fully developed, and command your attention. There's humor in this book, there's despair, and there's a voice that may be worth listening to (especially in an election year). Definitely worth reading!

Important Read!

Barken's All the Lonely Boys in New York, tells it like it was in 2008, dredging up memories of the Credit Crisis and from the wars in Irag and Afghanistan through vivid prose. The characters are real, and their moods draw our sympathy. The dialogue is fresh, and each scene compelling. After reading the author's first collection of stories, This Year in Jerusalem, I wanted more. Barken delivers, revealing a dark side and talent. The 250 pages fly by and are wonderfully illustrated by Diana Muller. This unique collaboration seizes on a moment in history that we're timid to discuss, positing a plausible explanation for a terrorist attack that was never solved, and expressing the anger, frustration and apathy that underly American politics. I was stunned by the power of Myles Fletcher's voice, and the twists and turns this thriller takes. You won't be able to put it down!

Leaves me Questing for more (in a good way)

I bought this book at a relatively high price and thus I was very nervous. I was hoping this book wasn't just another fraud. This book is really a book that composes a bunch of different procedures, that don't seem to correlate, and makes them into an entirely different system. You will learn how to utilize many different occult faculties with the end result being conscious contact with, to put it blatantly, the Divine. This is the book I have been looking for and it's a good thing that someone has put this sought after knowledge out.

I'm a huge fan of E.A's work, so I am fairly biased toward being supportive.

This book will give you insights into the experiences of a real, genuine, magickal clairvoyant. He has seen and communed with real angels, demons and more- and this book shows you the steps to achieving that level of mastery.

I don't have much to say except- READ THIS BOOK.

Clearly Written

I enjoyed this book a lot. The information isn't completely new or secret material that can't be found elsewhere, but it's presented in a clear way with precise and useful instructions. It's nice to read a book on this subject with succinct explanations and descriptions. There are not layers to dig through to get to his meaning, he presents it to you straight up. The only reason I gave it a 4 and not a 5 is because, as I said, other than his personal experiences this isn't new information. I found his personal experiences well worth reading though.

About the Author
John R. (Jack) Deller, Jr. is professor of electrical and computer engineering at Michigan State University where he directs the Speech Processing Laboratory. He received the 1998 IEEE Signal Processing Magazine Best Paper Award and the 1997 IEEE Signal Processing Society Meritorious Service Award for his six-year service as editor in chief of the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. Dr. Deller is the coauthor of Digital Signal Processing and the Microcontroller (Prentice Hall, 1999) and currently serves as associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Speech and Audio Processing. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

John H. L. Hansen is an associate professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder; he holds appointments in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Hansen serves as associate director for the Center for Spoken Language Understanding (CSLU) and director of research activities of the Robust Speech Processing Laboratory at CSLU. He has served as technical advisor to the U.S. delegate for NATO, and he is associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Speech and Audio Processing and of the IEEE Signal Processing Letters. Dr. Hansen received the 1990 National Science Foundation Research Initiation Award and has been named a Lilly Foundation Teaching Fellow for contributions to the advancement of engineering education.

John G. Proakis is a faculty member of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Northeastern University. His professional experience is in the general area of digital communications and digital signal processing. Dr. Proakis is the author of Digital Communications (McGraw-Hill, 3rd ed., 1995) and the coauthor of Introduction to Digital Signal Processing (Prentice Hall, 3rd ed., 1996); Advanced Digital Signal Processing (Macmillan, 1992); Communication Systems Engineering (Prentice Hall, 1994); Digital Signal Processing Using MATLAB (PWS, 1997); and Contemporary Communication Systems Using MATLAB (PWS, 1998). He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE.

The best comprehensive overview of speech processing

I've seen a lot of books on Speech processing, but this one's the best by quite some margin. Rabiner & Schafer's classic could've edged this one out, but it's slightly dated now(1978 was a long time ago!) - it remains a great source for the fundamentals, though. However, this book is uptodate, as well as quite exhaustive in its coverage of the basics. One can get a solid grasp of basic speech processing(eg pitch analysis), synthesis, compression and recognition. The chapters on recognition, especially, are quite impressive,with detailed treatment of all the standard techniques in the field,including Dynamic time warping,Hidden Markov models & Neural networks. Everything from isolated word recognition to large vocabulary continuous speech recognition is touched upon.
This book is an ideal starting point for exploring the world of speech processing,which is a very rich area of research and has virtually limitless commercial applications,too.
A word of caution though - this is not for the layman.One requires a bit of a background in mathematics,and a little knowledge of digital signal processing won't hurt either.
I have only nice things to say about this book.The only possible crib could be the hefty price tag,but then this is typical of books in this field.
All in all,it's an excellent textbook,which ought to be read by everyone working in speech processing.

Good overview

This is an attempt to cover many aspects of speech processing, including modeling, coding, synthesis, enhancement, and recognition. Since each of the mentioned areas is a thick book on its own, the present book does not and cannot provide in depth coverage. I like some stories told in the book, like the development of the mechanical vocoder. But I find it to be wordy and in many instances, somehow impractical, like the exagerated mathematical treatment of the acoustic tube model. Also, the mathematical notations tend to be awkward. Due to technological advances, many topics contained in this book are already outdated.

A good reference, but too theoretical

This book is very thorough, but at times it seems like the authors go out of their way to keep their discussion on a very theoretical level.
Chapter 1: A highly theoretical review of DSP. You need good knowledge of DSP to understand it.
Chapter 2: Goes over the human speech production and recognition systems. Here you get some practical info on the spectral and time-domain properties that distinguish speech sounds.
Chapter 3: Describes a model of the speech production based on a series of pulses passed through filters that correspond to features of the human speech production system. Practical issues such as which zero and pole values work best are left as an exercise to the reader.
Chapter 4: A lot of mathematics relating long-term statistical properties to those of a short frame of speech data. Contains good info on how to find recursive formulas for statistical properties of speech frames. It is a great shame that the authors don't include examples in MATLAB or pseudo code.
Chapter 5: Linear Prediction. Discusses a mathematical algorithm for creating a prediction filter that could be used to predict the next value in a series of data. In speech processing we are interested in using the coefficients of this prediction filter to encapsulate the properties of a speech frame. Examples of 1st,, 2nd, and 3rd order filters would have gone along way to illustrate how to implement this. There are some good formulas to measure the degree of similarities between speech frames based on their LP filter coefficients.
Chapter 6: Introduces the concept of the cepstrum. Cepstral analysis allows you to de-convolve speech data to separate the excitation source from the vocal tract filter. That way you can lifter out (a play on filter out) the excitation (responsible for pitch) and focus only on the vowel sounds. As always, how to make it work is left as an exercise.
The rest of the book is about speech coding and speech recognition. My class did not cover the later chapters, so I only read the parts that applied to projects.
The book helped me understand speech processing journal articles which tend to assume a lot of background knowledge.
The theoretical background that this book provides is necessary; good engineers need to understand the underpinnings of their bag of tricks. It is painful, however, at times. To apply the information in this book, you will certainly need a good mentor and a lot of tinkering in MATLAB.

The Brandon family would soon be joined by other pioneering families, and the town of Brandon, Florida was born. Few remnants of the town's colorful origins remain today to remind us of the brave and entrepreneurial settlers who laid down the cornerstone for the now-vibrant and growing community. The book covers the time period from the 1860s to the dawn of the 1980s. The author is a Brandon High School graduate and serves as the Brandon High School Alumni Historian. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book supports the Brandon High School Alumni Association and Center Place Fine Arts and Civic Association, both 501(c) non-profit organizations.

Marvelously portrays the history of Brandon, FL

I grew up in Brandon and ordered this book as soon as I heard about it. To my knowledge, this is the first and only pictorial history of my hometown. The book exhaustively covers the town's history from the 1860s all the way to the 1980s. I absolutely loved reading all the stories (I had no idea Brandon has such a long, rich history!) and seeing all the historic images. The photos from the 50s, 60s and 70s brought back many fond memories! The book was incredibly well researched, and the photos truly brought the city's past to life. For anyone who grew up in Brandon or is a Florida history buff, this book is a must-read. Kudos to Mr. Wigh for compiling such a treasure trove of interesting historic information, rare photos, and personal stories from the town's founding families.

Just how close are we to the End Times? You just might be surprised!

Hard to believe that I've been studying the Book of Revelation for almost 30 years now and until recently never understood what I had been missing for quite some time. It took an in-depth, verse by verse, study of it to finally have that "A-ha!" moment where it clicked. Now I can honestly say that when I pick up books written on the Book of Revelation, I can view it with a biblical view instead of merely another book on Bible Prophecy.

Wake the Bride from author Jeff Kinley, conveys the beauty of what awaits believers and non believers alike one day in the not so distant future using the Book of Revelation and breaking it down in a simplified manner. This is NOT an extensive look into the last prophetic book of the Bible, but a wake up call that we are called to be ready when Jesus returns in the rapture, an event the Bible highlights must happen before the ushering in of the Tribulation Period, those 7 years of God's judgment and final call to those who dwell on the earth, to choose Him or perish forever in everlasting judgment being cast into the lake of fire.

While many would argue why such a loving God would offer this as our final destination, we must realize that God does not desire for any to spend an eternity in everlasting torment, but it is our choice that decides our own fate. We ourselves choose and thus the urgency for many to stop waiting and get right with God now, before they simply miss out and have to endure the Tribulation period foretold in Revelation, Daniel, 1 and 2 Thessalonians, Isaiah and other books of the Bible. This book calls us to search within our own lives as to just how ready are we? The letters to the seven churches in the Bible applied to the regional churches of Asia Minor in that day but is also a modern day look at evaluating the life of a believer even today. Jeff details one of those letters, the Church of Laodicea, which I believe we are seeing all over the world today, as churches put their Bible doctrine on the shelf in lieu of accepting all forms of religion and bypassing the less than desirable portions of the Bible out of fear of offending anyone.

He also takes readers into the heart of the Tribulation that is to come, the seven seals, the trumpets and bowl judgments and how that will impact the world possibly. One chapter I really enjoyed was the recent rise to such "heavenly" movies where people and children have claimed to have visited heaven but all their views are inconsistent with what the Bible describes heaven will be like and all their stories conflict with one another. Are we being set up for a great deception that will take us away from the truth of the Bible and the Jesus we need to know for our salvation?

I received Wake the Bride by Jeff Kinley compliments of Harvest House Publishers for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review, aside from a free copy of the book for my honest opinion. At little over 200 pages this will give readers a brief overview of the Bible Prophecy events from the Bible and I believe will encourage the reader to take their own personal journey through the Bible along the way as they research the various scripture references and other notable resources discussed in this book. For me, I rate it a 4 out of 5 stars, but I LOVE a book that really digs in deep to books like Revelation and Daniel. For those looking for a overview of what's to come and what we should be prepared for and focused on, this will definitely be worth it.

A clear panorama of end-times events and their significance to our lives now

After reading "In the Days of Noah" by Jeff Kinley, I was looking forward to his new book released this fall, "Wake The Bride", which covers the book of Revelation and the eventual return of Jesus Christ. Kinley hits "the important mountain peaks", giving the reader a "clear panorama of end-times events and their significance" to our lives now.

This was a great summary and commentary on the last book in The Bible, which made my heart pound in places as I tried to grasp and comprehend the End of Days. The questions raised in the chapter "Gold, Silver and Bronze" really made me pause and start trying to formulate what those answers are! What are those answers? Those questions most of all were most valuable to me, along with the commentary the author provides as believers as myself try to understand the book of Revelation. This will be a book that I will return to in the study of the Word. As Kinley notes: "Reading about Jesus's Second Coming is meant to evoke a tangible response in His bride, leading her to repentance, reverence, rejoicing or shock and silence. However, it cannot leave her affected." (p 158) Amen!

an easy read, but packed with so much information

Kinley has done it again! Using this for our youth group Sunday morning small groups (they are still talking about reading Christian Zombie Killers from two years ago!) The books title has become a bit of a catch phrase in the halls of the youth center. The information is sticking with the kids and really making them evaluate their faith, what they are doing with their faith and if they are awake and ready or asleep. Very sound Biblical analysis, an easy read, but packed with so much information. Love Kinley's use of footnotes to explain it is not what he believes but what the Bible teaches. This study has us with an open Bible in our left hand and Wake the Bride in our right hand. That is pretty cool to see with a group of teenagers! And the cover is really cool looking!
