About the Author

Cheech & Chong defined a generation with their classic, counter-culture comedy albums and cult films, such as the wildly popular Earache My Eye and Up in Smoke. After their split, the pair went on to have successful solo careers in both TV and film, with Cheech taking on roles like Joe on Nash Bridges and Belini in Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and Chong portraying Leo in That 70’s Show. After 25 years apart they reunited in 2008 for a comeback comedy tour, new video game, and feature film. They live in Los Angeles, California.

I would write a HUGE positive review of this amazing, hilarious and oh-so-true compendium of cannabis but I can't seem to remember what was in this book...or was it a CD? a BluRay?

Errors in this book

I recently attended a Cheech and Chong concert and it was one of the best concerts I have seen in a long time. They haven't lost a thing. I bought this book because I am a long time pot smoker and one of the authors of California's Prop 215. I loved the book but there are two glaring errors in the book I am going to point out in hopes that either Cheech or Chong reads this review and corrects the errors for the second printing.

1 - Page 85 - Stoner Etiquette - Entry number 4 - When you light a bowl, light the corner to leave fresh weed on the other side. NEVER do that. It is dumb. What happens if you do that is the hit will contain only a small percentage of smoke and a large percentage of fresh air, which will dilute the hit severely. When lighting a bowl you should always light the entire surface of the bowl for the most powerful hit possible. I would only light a small area if I was a total lightweight (and I am as far from a lightweight as is humanly possible).

2 - Page 99 - Gravity Bong. A bong is a water pipe that filters smoke by passing the smoke through water. The Gravity Bong does use water, but not for filtering. It uses water pressure to fill the bottle with smoke and to fill your lungs with smoke, but none of the smoke is filtered therefore it is not a bong.

Sorry to be so picky C&C but I gotta point these out. I still love ya!

Fascinating book about marijuana, with facts, little known stories, myths, etc., all interspersed with classic Cheech and Chong bits. Worth $20 for sure!!!

For a first novel ‘So Glad He’s Dead’ is an excellent read

For a first novel ‘So Glad He’s Dead’ is an excellent read. It is realistic and gripping. Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down! I loved the characters and the way they came to life as the story progressed. It almost felt like I was in the prison as I read. I could hear the keys turning in the locks and visualize the woman in the cells. I loved the twists and turns in the story, drawing all together and ending really well. I can’t wait for Heather’s next novel. If it’s the story she indicates in ‘So Glad He’s Dead’ about the Vonnie character, I’ll be the first one to buy a copy!

This book is different than any other I've read. I like the writing style, it's easy to read.I admire the way the author has made the characters come to life and i can picture the prison as the story unfolds. So Glad He's Dead is hard to put down as i can"t wait to see what happens! I will definitely read any other novel from the author.

Amazing story. Smyth's deft prose guided me safely through a gritty read. I was surprised that I felt compassion for Jess straight away, despite her conviction for murder. Smyth took me step by step through the reality of settling into a long stay in a women's prison. The lives of the prison women as entangled as the lives of the guards. This book stood out to be with it's level of compassion for the main character, I really am amazed that by the end of the novel I understood why Jess is "so glad he's dead.'
As the story unfolded my heart melted when her son, Ben, wrote letters to her. I began to wonder what the real reason is that she is in prison.
This book really spoke to me, as a mother.
The novel was a good length, still I am left wanting more.

The tales told by my late grandparents and parents had be part of my growing up. Also (because of these tales), "The Seventh Day" caught my attention and best of all, written by Yu Hua.

This book is not about "grandfather's" stories about the dead. It is from the imagination of Yu Hua how a person will "experience" when passed away in the first seventh day. I must applaud that Yu Hua pieces the related incidents of the main character very well. His simple writing style makes the novel an easy read and understand the world we live in is filled with love and trust.

I will never think how a person's "first seventh day" (頭七) has such association with his (living) life and surroundings. The story content and length is apt to narrate the whole experience of being "dead" and what one can learn from in living years as well as the early days of demise.

If you understand Chinese (language), I will recommend you to read this to appreciate the story and underlying learning points.

Magical realism?

The Seventh day is a story of a soul lost in the land of ghosts who cannot find rest after their death. The story is divided into 7 days following the death of the story's main character. Yang Fei's life unfolds before our eyes as he wanders through the limbo and the real world. His other character's stories weave into a magical fabric, akin to that of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, albeit the setting is modern and urban. The stories depict a mix of materialism and traditional values and is a mordant metaphor on what China is today.

Rich language and lyricism make is what makes this book so appealing. This is definitely a world class literature. I hope that the translation which is supposed to be published in Jan. 2015 is as rich and appealing as the Chinese version.

David McGriffy has been a programmer since the earliest days of the personal computer. He has piloted both radio-controlled and human-carrying aircraft, including gliders of both sorts. He worked on GPS systems before they had even finished launching all the satellites. He's written embedded systems code for top computer companies and for fun. He has traveled the world to do failure-mode analyses on the control systems of offshore oil rigs and is an inventor on a patent for a vibration analysis system. He is an expert on website performance and has been published by IEEE on the subject. David runs an audio software company, VVAudio, which produces plugins for surround sound and virtual reality. He has a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Texas at Austin.

He is currently adjunct professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Nevada at Las Vegas, and President of Sable Systems International.

Exellent book in John Lighton-ese

This is an excellent how-to manual. If you have read manuals for Sable Systems products, you are familiar with John Lighton's writing style. It is very conversational and sprinkled with a certain personal style of humor. Unfortunately, the preview pages here on Amazon do not include the preface, so I will quote a particularly choice part of the first page of the preface here. It quite clearly describes who should read this book, while being an excellent example of the kind of humor throughout the book.

"I suggest that you first read this book as an idiosyncratic sort of novel, including the parts you know you'll never need, and then, with that background, return to the sections most relevant to your scientific goals. If you don't have time, it may be that you are too important to read this book and should pass it on to a factotum who will do your understanding for you. Don't feel slighted by this judgment: you may go far if it applies to you. As Villiers de l-Isle-Adam's Axel might have said, "Understand? Our servants will do that for us." The goal is for someone in the operation to understand. If you are that person, welcome: This is your book."

If this turns you off, just read P.C Wither's 2001 article "Design, calibration and calculation for flow-through respirometry systems" in the Austral. J. Zool. 49:445-461 and D. Vleck's 1987 "Measurement of O2 consumption, CO2 production, and water vapor production in a closed system" in J Appl Physiol 62:2103-2106 and go to John Lighton's webpage [...] for conversion tables and other questions. I think you'll get a much more complete and rounded understanding by reading this book, but it really doesn't have any new information. It's just a very, very clear and somewhat amusing brain dump from an expert in respirometry to any willing reader.
