With the advice of some of the best live aboard and boating experts that I have ever had the pleasure to meet, I have sought to put together a resource highlighting many of the most significant issues and challenges that any liveaboard would one day have to endure - all being the kind of things that I wish that someone would have taken the time to teach me before I was literally ankle deep in water.

Living aboard is a wonderfully rewarding lifestyle, and while not easy, is anything but impossible. In looking back on the research that I did before undertaking this lifestyle, I felt as though much of what I read did not provide an objective portrayal of the liveaboard lifestyle. I wanted to put together an honest and passionate depiction of the lifestyle and its issues and challenges, along with solutions and ideas and caveats so that potential liveaboards are provided with a valuable tool to start out with. I hope that is what I have provided.

About the Author
Originally from the small coastal town of Bayville, NJ, Mark grew up sailing small boats for years. With only a rudimentary knowledge of the inner workings of larger boats and boat mechanics, Mark moved aboard his 33 Hunter Marine sailboat, The Morning Fog.

For what was supposed to be a turnkey purchase for just under $30,000, Mark's boat was less than ideal from day one. Despite paying top dollar for a marine survey, everything broke quickly, causing more than $6,000 in unexpected costs in the first month and a half and $10,000 in the first year and a half. To make matters worse, the Fog was not built to be a competent liveaboard boat, offering major sacrifices in every aspect of the boat's design. Mark explains how he rebuilt the boat from scratch, starting with the seacocks and plumbing, then the electrical systems, the chainplates and through-deck fittings, and totally upgraded the engine and alternator.

Everything just kept falling apart. He learned an unbelievable amount, things that someone should have told him, and lots that no one might have ever thought to tell him. He wanted to write a book that, had he read it, might have helped him make better decisions and save thousands of dollars.
Mark continues to practice law and devotes a significant part of his practice to representing artists, musicians and filmmakers, often in a pro bono capacity. 

Mark is a voting member of the Recording Academy and lives in Los Angeles, CA with his wife and four year old child.

The wanabe's Definitive Guide for Living Aboard

I had initially read Mark's first edition of Living Aboard prior to reading this edition. I enjoyed and found the first edition so informative and helpful that I acquired and resd this edition. Mark has truly tried to write, "the Definitive Guide for Liveaboards." The areas covered amount to the A to Z coverage with much depth to each of the areas. Mark includes how to choose a boat, estimating the cost of purchasing, selecting a marina, maintaining, preparing to live on a boat, Amenities ( communications, entertainment, refrigeration) safety, sanitation and many more. He also discusses the liveaboard issues and accomidations for families, children and pets. Mark has chapters on many issues that are often not considered by the first time liveaboard and I found some issues and ideas about livingaboard related to cruising that I had not considered myself even though I often cruise both inshore and offshore. I have recommended Living Aboard to many friends and individuals on websites for liveaboards and cruisers. Many have emailed me to let me know they found the book beneficial in their decision making process.

Saved Me $$$$$$ and Lots of Stress

Without any question, this book helped me save thousands of dollars and really keep perspective when I chose and bought my boat. If I had to sum it up, this book is mostly about perspective on a lot of things, such as the lifestyle of living on a boat, and also on choosing a boat, buying a boat and upgrading a boat. I walked away from 2 boats because of this. And the cost table is like one big myth buster revealing all of the tons of hidden costs of boating. It not only should be read by every liveaboard but I recommend this book for every boater too.

A seasoned and experienced sailor, Mark Nicholas has written an ideal introduction for anyone aspiring to enjoy life aboard any kind of boat in The Essentials Of Living Aboard: The Definitive Guide For New Liveaboards. The reader will learn how to choose and buy a boat that is appropriate for one's needs, including the finesse of the buying process, negotiations, insurance, and financing, amenities aboard a boat, navigation and safety matters, sanitation issues, legal issues, tips, tricks, and techniques, and more. Of special interest is the warnings about search, seizure, and forfeiture - even though a boat may be one's home, it does not have the same protections against search and seizure as a landbound home. Furthermore, forfeiturelaws mean that the government can seize property (including the boat one lives upon!) and never return it, even if the owner is never accused or convicted of any crime. An absolute "must-have" for anyone considering making a boat one's permanent dwelling.

Outstanding Contribution

Academician Shilov presents a synthesis of Algebra, Geometry and Analysis in exemplary treatment.
The text is quite lucid, as is expected from such an esteemed author.
The first chapter, Determinants, makes the topic as painless as possible (Smirnov does nicely in this regard,also).
Instead of decrying Determinants, why not understand them? This book is an opportunity to do just that.
Second Chapter, Linear Spaces, provides axiomatic development, with rather nice proofs.The text presses onward,
with the mandatory discussions of (among many other things) Linear Equations, Linear Functions and Quadratic Forms.
Three particularly noteworthy chapters are: Coordinate Transformations, Orthogonalization, and the last (long and superb) Infinite- Dimensional Euclidean Spaces.
The material throughout is coherently and lucidly displayed.
The problems are straightforward, some with hints, many with answers.
Proofs are understandable, examples are meaningful.
Indeed, this text is suitable for self-study (a stated aim of the author).
A fine achievement , worthy of serious study.

About the Author
Stephen Ledoux, Ph.D., is a Professor of Behaviorology at the State University of New York (SUNY) in Canton, NY who has been teaching and publishing in the field for 35 years. Stephen publishes and lectures nationally and internationally on the subject of understanding and applying Behaviorology to solving the human side of local and global problems. I very strongly disliked this book--- Ledoux's style of writing is very redundant

I very strongly disliked this book--- Ledoux's style of writing is very redundant, very dry, and he spends a huge majority of this book writing why behavior analysts separated from psychology. (Spoiler: It's because psychologists believe in a mind and non-physical things in the world while behavior analysts don't, there was no need to spend 50 pages discussing this.)

I honestly read it about two times in my entire semester of behavior analysis, and found it to be a complete waste of money and time to buy it. His writing style is very confusing, drab, and difficult to read (he insists on using no pronouns or anything that implies a mind/soul, etc.), and I'm glad to be done with it for good. Unless you absolutely have to get this for a class, I would not recommend that you buy it.

A life-changing book

Since reading this book, I truly believe that the natural science of behaviorology offers a paradigm of understanding that really can solve global problems just as the book claims. This book has changed my worldview. I struggled for a long time trying to resolve mystical conceptions, conditioned during childhood, with science. The knowledge I gained from this book has provided me with a sense of relief, understanding, and confidence that I never imagined possible. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in human or animal behavior, and to anyone who wants to experience a measurable, controllable, positive change in their life and even in their part of the world.

A must read!!

If the world, and the science of behavior as part of the world, is to be saved, ultimately we will need to adopt and practice a natural science approach to all human actions and activities. This book lays the groundwork for the needed adoption of such approach to all things human and natural....a must read for anyone who sees it is not quite too late (but almost!) to transform the world as we know it....

A Practical And Entertaining Book For Chief Marketing Officers And Unicorns Alike

This book manages to combine a lot of different trends and approaches together that would seem to exist in tension but also work well together. This book is clearly marketed at Chief Marketing Officers or other related executives, and it is written in such a way that it appeals to the insight and wisdom of well-respected business leaders who are well-recognized in the field. The book combines a ruthlessly blunt approach to measuring whether marketing ideas work, but shows a humane attitude towards people, especially workers. This is a good approach to take, as sometimes people view their ideas with more respect than other people. This book is also an example of a project where someone put their spend where their mouth was, so to speak, in submitting ideas to the marketplace of ideas and leveraging the wisdom of crowds to deliver relevant content.

In terms of its principles, the book is consistent and detailed in what it means, with case studies to support its opinions. Its ten principles include the importance of goals, the need for shared vision, the role of data in inspiring creativity, the importance of finding unicorns [1], the importance of culture in predicting success and failure, choosing measurements wisely, the worth of measurement, continuous improvement, customization and individualization, and building a framework for improvement. The book, including two great case studies in the appendices, comes in at a bit more than 300 pages, a lot of which is made up of pages of comments and insights gained from actual business and marketing campaigns. Reading this book and checking out its associated content (like an excellent video about hands only cpr from Vinnie Jones) is an eye-opening experience into the difference between viral views and actual, meaningful results.

This is a fine book to read, but even more so it is written for application. The book presents some stiff challenges to Chief Marketing Officers about the need to align marketing goals with business objectives, the need to seek less domineering and more complicated staff, and the need for marketing to reach women better. However, this somewhat tough advice is blended with providing marketing executives with the data needed to support bold initiatives with risk and reward possibilities in an attitude of iterative experimental design. For those marketing executives willing and able to put the insight of this book into practice, there is a potential of support and encouragement. To commit to any change, whether of a moral nature or a strategic nature, is a difficult matter, and this book, written as it is by consulting leaders in helping to encourage such cultural changes in business, is sorely needed.

[1] The book calls those who are data-friendly, cooperative, sensitive to the needs of others, smart, resilient, and achievers unicorns. I’m not sure I like being called a unicorn.

How and why brilliant ideas well-executed in "the conditions that allow magic to happen" can achieve business objectives

Those who have read Shane Atchison and Jason Burby's previous book, Actionable Web Analytics: Using Data to Make Smart Business Decisions, already know that they are diehard pragmatists, driven by a determination to understand what works in the business world, what doesn't, and why. Then they share what they have learned with as many people as possible.

In this volume they introduce a four-step process with ten core principles that will help business leaders in almost any organization (whatever its size and nature may be) to deliver "true business value in digital marketing." My own opinion is that the process and principles could also be of substantial value to those who create or increase demand offline.

More than 70 business leaders were interviewed and portions of their contributions are strategically inserted throughout Atchison and Burby's lively and eloquent narrative. This is more than a clever reader-friendly device. The comments are relevant and, more often than not, enrich the give point from a unique perspective.

These are among the dozens of passages of greatest interest and value to me, also listed to suggest the scope of Atchison and Burby's coverage:

The "Does It Work?" process is rather simple but, more often than not, a deceptively challenging journey rather than a destination. Here are the steps: Set Goals, Inspire Brilliant Creativity, Measure the Results, and Make a Difference. These are stages, really, rather than steps. They are also sequential and interdependent. Failure is assured if right goals are not set and/or there are no brilliant ideas and/or the measurement is insufficient (or worse yet inaccurate) and/or there is little if any) impact of efforts expended.

Hence the great importance of the ten core principles that can guide and direct the planning and implementation of the given initiative. I think the "Does It Work?" process can succeed in almost any competitive marketplace, online or offline. I also think it can help to establish or strengthen a workplace culture within which the workers' personal growth and professional development are most likely to thrive.

That is indeed a compelling vision, isn't it? However, it would be a good idea to keep in mind an observation made by Thomas Edison long ago: "Vision without execution is hallucination."

The digital landscape is rapidly changing, but the principles to work and measure by in this environment remain constant.

The straight-forward title certainly suggests the central theme of the book, which is refreshing in a category where big ideas are frequent, but execution and actionable analysis are often left unexamined. The book is in part a practical guide, lending insight from numerous thought leaders throughout, and inspires action. And is also part reference for an organizational vision, covering topics such as fostering an innovative culture and encouraging professional development.

Perhaps most appealing to the business-minded reader, each principle focuses on measurable results. In some cases, those results may not be "positive", but this (relentless) pursuit to quantify sets the foundation for identifying ways to improve. That honesty is present throughout the book, and speaks to the collective real-world experience of the authors and contributors shared in each chapter.

Having worked in product development and business development roles for a wide range of digital businesses spanning start-ups to publicly traded companies, each chapter reminded me of the wide variety of challenges most organizations face. The principles and insights in this book can be applied to many, and perhaps most importantly, provide a framework for continual improvement that can be utilized personally and professionally. So, as a book, Does it Work? Yes. Yes it does.

Good light reading & trivia

This book attempts to show the human side of presidents, and includes a short profile of each as well as amusing anecdotes. In reality it is hard to really get a feel for the personalities of some of the presidents profiled because many of the anecdotes are fanciful legends rather an accurate portrayal. For example, the George washington and the cherry tree legend is repeated here. On the other hand, much presidential wit and humor is recounted. Some fairly mediocre presidents ahd a pretty good wry sense of humor, such as Warrren G. harding. This book is entertaining but not a primary source for historical information.

Lightweight but sometimes interesting

Very light reading and not at all comprehensive, but this book doesn,t aim for that. Instead it uses anecdotes (real and unsubstantiated) to give a different view of America's past and present leaders. The author points out those stories that are probably fables and he does give a 2 or 3 page synopsis of each presidents tenure. It is very good for what it is.

Presidents are people too.

No, this is not a scholarly reference work. What it is is an amusing read that helps to put human faces on our Presidents- especially those who served back when we didn't see the President on TV every day. Each President is covered with an introduction of a few pages, then a series of anecdotes that range from touching to laugh-out-loud. Some are unsubstantiated, and the author is up front about that. Extensive footnotes provide documentation on every story.
You learn that Lincoln was not only one of our greatest Presidents, but also one of the wittiest. That Coolidge was a penny-pincher with a dry wit. That Washington at times had doubts about his abilities. We even get Reagan and his one-liners, and Clinton with all his back slapping (though the book being published in 1996 leaves out some of the best material of his Presidency!)
